re: INTERIM FEEDBACK - On a scale of 1 -10, where are you on Miles

An honest answer for me would be:

quote:

5 - Miles is Average as a coach - and we've seen the best of him at LSU

To say he is a horrible coach is dishonest because that's simply not true. To say I am happy with him isn't honest either, and I do hope LSU gets some new blood in who isn't a player's coach and is more of a disciplinarian.

I think he's won with supreme talent that he also struggles to prepare and motivate. As a result they lose to teams of equal or better talent (Bama, Clemson) or fall flat against teams they should dominate (Ole Miss) because they feel no matter how they play they will win.

He's a great player coach and his guys love playing for him, but he's not a good coach to lead a team into battle. His methods are old fashioned and outdated for today's game.

He kept pulling me back in. I was pretty sure I was done after the LSU-Bama championship game, and then again after the Clemson embarrassment. After the way we played against Ole Miss this year, I realized there was no reason to suspect it will get better under him.

And he will pull you back in with his next big win. And then lose you again with his next loss.

You seem entirely too reactionary.

Maybe he is tired of getting those reactions.

Of course they can but next year doesn't look promising either. Just when we get the offense going we will likely have all new skill players...not good for a program that is said to reload and not rebuild.

Or are we agreeing?

I don't even know what we are debating anymore

I consider myself an eternal optimist, especially when it comes to LSU football. But I have to sort of agree with you here. I'm not ready to cut the cord just yet, but a lot will hinge on how this HUGE approaching Signing Day goes. I also really feel like next year is (at least for me) a bit of a " shite or get off the pot" kind of year. If we lay an egg against an Ole Miss type and end up with 4 straight losses to Bama and three straight disappointing seasons... It'll be really hard to continue to get behind Les.

I definitely don't think he is irreplaceable.

But I also think it would be a huge risk.

I agree it would be a risk but more because of how it would look to a potential candidate that a successful coach was fired. If he stepped away on his own I believe many coaches would be interested in coaching here.

re: INTERIM FEEDBACK - On a scale of 1 -10, where are you on Miles

Exactly.

He's not going to pull me back in with the next big win, because frankly I don't know what game he could realistically win that would a big one. A&M this year? No. Even if we did win it owuld be cool but nothing that would change our season.

The LSU championship game showed a bad side to me. It showed he had absolutely no Plan B when his Plan A was an absolute failure. It was embarrassing to watch that game and see our coach with his trademarked befuddled look on the sideline, completely clueless on what to even do.

The Clemson game started like so many LSU games do. We come out white hot, knock their best player out, get a nice lead...and then completely fall flat, go conservative, allow them to comeback, and we lost.

So why invest anymore emotion into an LSU game when you can already predict the outcome? And you recognize a never changing pattern of LSU football.

All I see his Bama getting #1/#2 recuiting classes every year while LSU keeps slipping. We might catch up to our big brother one day, but for now we are on the same level as Ole Miss - our season hinges on beating Bama, like their's does beating LSU.

This is all I've ever said.

It's one thing to suggest you'd want Miles gone (entirely another trying to convince sane people that forcing him out wasn't irrational at best) but it's a HUGE risk replacing any very successful coach. How many times have we seen a successful coach replaced by ANOTHER equally over even more successful one? How many times have we seen a successful coach replaced by a guy that came in and was worse?

The latter has far more examples, and oddly enough, Miles fits in with the former at LSU!

Look...one of you knuckleheads out there with a crystal ball feel free to give it a look and find the that sure thing replacement. You do, I'm on board. I really like Les Miles and I've enjoyed his time as LSU's Head Coach...but if you could guarantee me that if he's replaced we go on a BAMA run, then I'd be first in line to shake his hand, thank him for his time in Baton Rouge, and pat him on his arse on the way out.

Without a sure thing, making a change because some are butt-hurt is crazy. You make a change for two reasons: 1) Your coach leaves and you have to. 2) Your program is losing or is in so obvious a state that you're forced to make a move. Florida got EXTREMELY lucky when they replaced an under-performing Ron Zook with Urban Meyer. They were the exception...

again, a large majority of the criticism he gets is because of his zany demeanor. if he didn't present himself as such a doofus so often, people wouldn't give him so much crap. that being said he would still be criticized by a high number of fans because we aren't winning as many games as you know who.

i have never been a miles fan but i am an lsu fan so i will continue to offer what support i can while he is in charge, but my biggest concern is if he does indeed go, who do you replace him with? there really isn't an ideal, realistic option out there right now. maybe next year or the year after the timing will be right. i'd rather continue to roll with les then end up with fricking bo pelini or whoever the frick was being rumored as a candidate during the last michigan flirtation.

The way this season had gone, I'd say a solid 5. I really think his best days are behind him.

At his peak: 9

Now: 7, with plenty of room to move back up with some needed staff changes and the next two recruiting classes.
