Get a better defensive scheme, got to land the big players from the state (or at least you can't lose them to division opponents), and MUST develop Jennings and Harris into QBs that can win games, not just manage them

I would say #2 is the biggest thing, and has been the recent downfall of programs like Florida and Texas, etc, but Saban has been able to find "game managers" as you call them in McElroy & McCarron and has won 3 out of the 4 last national titles with guys like that.

Why? because of the emphasis on defense and the running game/OL. And most importantly, his attention to detail in every facet.

Which would answer your question about what Miles has to do; he lacks the attention to detail that a Coach like Saban has. Couple that with gameday adjustments/awareness. Miles has a tough time seeing the big picture while on the sideline. It's certainly not player talent. And Im not sure it's something he can acquire at this point.

So we are basing our future on others decline?
Forget every one else and other teams. What do we need to do to obtain excellence? It has nothing to do with Saban and it has everything to do with what we do from now on. We know what we have now from leadership. It will not change. Is this the horse we want to ride in the derby?

Question: What do you think are the 2 or 3 major changes that Les needs to make to catch up to Alabama and keep ahead of Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas A&M?

New O-Line coach is a step in the right direction. It is time for Stud to go.

and define "soon".

Saban is leaving Alabama "soon"? What is that? 10 years from now?

C'mon.

Great post. As far as the changes that need to be made-

Much of the coaching talk has centered around Chavis and Miles. However, I think Stud and Raymond both should be on notice. Both the line and secondary have shown signs of regression and poor fundamentals. That's unacceptable IMO.

I'm usually not a "fire the coach" type, but I think he might wanna take a look at upgrading both Stud and Raymond. moreso Stud, I think Raymond's job will get easier when a few of our current DBs get a full offseason, and we get further fortified by incoming recruits.

other than that, I think we just gotta be patient while some of these guys from the last couple classes come into their own.

I wonder how well Cam adjusted to our offensive staff, I wonder given the chance if he would not hire his own core of coaches.

Good point, I'm sure he would be able to bring in a couple quality assistants if we made some changes.

Hey, this all sounds great, but are we about ready to roll out PachydermDroppings.com just in case?

And the starting QB next year will look to be the third straight Alabama QB to win a national title in his first season starting. Probably not a great example to support your case.

anyone else makes this thread and they're absolute toast.

I, for one, will admit that I have been less than positive. Actually, I've been really really negative.

I don't know what it will take to right things, but waiting for CNS to retire just seems so defeated...almost pussified

The best thing that can happen is to absolutely kill it in this recruiting class. I know we will lose a guy or two that we want from time to time. Jmcknight was a big deal but really turned out to be not that big a deal; we have always had the ability to get running backs.

However, L. Collins was a big deal and still is. He would have had the opportunity to start as a freshman (ie: not special teams).

It worries me that guys are willing to jump from our own back yard to effectively sit out a year because they think it's better for them.

LF is a big deal. Hootie is a big deal. The tackle/guard (whatever...olineman) from west monroe is a big deal given our oline issues.

so even 5-7 years? That's an eternity in college football. His contract runs through 2020

I just don't think he leaves for Texas. Why would he. Bama may not be able to match Texas in terms of money, but if he flirts with them, they'll surely give him a significant raise

Saban could conceivably get 10 to 12 million per year at Texas and UT wouldn't even blink they have so much damn money. Could BAMA match it? Probably. Would it hurt to match it as compared to Texas? Definitely.

we'll see, hopefully you're right.

sadly i think it might take Miles 3 years to recover from losing all of the defensive talent from last year. Couple that with breaking in his own new QB & the possible loss of Cameron & im not sure where LSU is going to stand either.

No disrespect meant Chicken, and I'm not disagreeing with your post, however I prefer to address this with the very root core of our problems...Retention.

If retention of our best players can be addressed and remedied, most if not all of our other problems will become much more minor.

I agree that we can 'wait Bama out'...but we need to address OUR problems in the meanwhile.

Almost every one of our current problems comes down to one thing...retention.

I know, it sounds too simple, but contemplate it for a minute or two.

Retention of our top players....
