to get a kid their 1st handgun.

I don't know, but not 13. As responsible as they may be with a long gun, they are way too full of foolishness at that age.

I've bought handguns for some of my children. The youngest was 18. As mentioned by many already, handguns are just inherently more dangerous than shotguns or rifles. I don't know about your son, but 13 was too young for my children. FTR, minimum legal age to own a handgun in LA is 18. Have to be 21 to buy one.

So what would be wrong with buying the gun for him and he only touches the gun under the fathers supervision?

18, think of it as instilling a healthy respect for the laws of our country... Buying him one young is sending the wrong message.

And I bet you don't have to worry about him doing something ignorant later in life because he knows the consequences of that gun going off.

I don't see a problem with getting a kid a handgun that's "his" but I don't think they should have access to it. When dad gets his out he takes the kids out and puts it in his hand when it's time to shoot.

That your old man sees fit to disregard the laws so why should he?

I'm all for teaching a healthy respect for firearms but the laws exist and part of being a parent is instilling values in your child. One of those values is respecting the laws that govern us.

I see the situation as a slippery slope, and to be clear I'm not looking for a cyberbickering contest.

So you feel the same about buying a kid a shotgun when he can't legally purchase it himself?

If there are State and/or Federal laws prohibiting such then I am absolutely against it. There are some States that have such laws in place...

Don't you have children? Do they have shotguns? Rifles?

Are you against me purchasing my son a youth shotgun since he can't legally purchase it until he's 18?

My advice was to buy the kid a gun and only let him use it while under direct supervision. What are your views on that?

Your changing the argument, but deflection is how you work so I'll humor you. Maybe you'll learn something.

Laws prohibiting purchase do just that, they prohibit purchase. Laws regarding possession are entirely different. But you know that...

I have two children, the oldest is 6. She's been in the field with me and has expressed interest in hunting since the age of 4. In my State there are no laws prohibiting her from possessing or using a long gun under direct supervision. And when she's ready she'll shoot under my supervision. That may be another year or two. She won't own a gun, she'll be using a gun legally purchased and owned by me. As would be the case in the scenario you outline.

Now, most parents would shudder at the very idea of their child possibly getting criminal prosecution because of a choice they as a parent made. I sure as hell am not getting charged either. If laws existed prohibiting her from using a firearm until a specific age then she'd be waiting until such time as it was legal for her to hunt.

I couldn't live with myself if my child was prosecuted and then faced diminished opportunities because her delinquent ideologue father decided it would be a good idea for her to circumvent the laws.

Does that make me a bad parent? Maybe...

In my home my children won't drink until their 21. It's the law, but we know kids will be kids and it won't happen in my presence. My children will respect the bag limits. It's the law. They won't possess a handgun until they reach the legal age. It's the law.

Sorry, call me old fashioned...

So why you are telling the OP to wait until his son is 18 or you'll be sending the "wrong message"? You're being a hypocrite.

No I didn't.

Either that or your being an obstinate and functionally illiterate moron, I'll let the other OB members decide for themselves...
