Committee tells Ole Miss to get rid of "Ole Miss", symbols, and change names

LINK

No kidding. And the Chancellor will probably go along with it. Committee wants them to get rid of Ole Miss and use University of Mississippi. Ditch the symbols, including the name Rebels. Change names of buildings such as Vardaman Hall.

Kindn of like what Germany did under the direction of the Allies.

From one of the comments...

quote:

I'm honestly torn on this.

On one hand, it's depressing to see yet another university paying the danegeld to race hustling, pseudo-intellectual thought police and calling it "dialogue."

On the other hand, if there ever was a university that fully earned this miserable fate, it is without question Ole Miss.

The last part made me IRL.

Rename it Sheniqua Le'trelle Obama Hall.

I doubt the majority of the student body is okay with this.

It don't take a genius to see what that means. It means use UM all the time.

IIRC, they voted somewhere in excess of 90% to keep Colonel Reb (or perhaps the nickname rebels).

I think alumni could protest this by just not giving any funds.

That's just BS. I remember in 2001 Iona was matched against Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA tourney (heartbreaking loss for the Gaels).

The back story was about the fact that 44 years earlier the governor of Mississippi refused to let Ole Miss take the court against Iona because Iona had a black man, Stanley Hill, on the roster. Ole Miss forfeited the game because of some politician. The players wanted to play.

On the night of the game in 2001, Stanley Hill sat with the Chancellor of Ole Miss and the President of Iona College during. Actions mean more than symbols.
