Alzheimer's breakthrough hailed as 'turning point'

LINK

quote:

The discovery of the first chemical to prevent the death of brain tissue in a neurodegenerative disease has been hailed as the "turning point" in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

More work is needed to develop a drug that could be taken by patients.

But scientists say a resulting medicine could treat Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and other diseases.

In tests on mice, the Medical Research Council showed all brain cell death from prion disease could be prevented.

Prof Roger Morris, from King's College London, said: "This finding, I suspect, will be judged by history as a turning point in the search for medicines to control and prevent Alzheimer's disease."

He told the BBC a cure for Alzheimer's was not imminent but: "I'm very excited, it's the first proof in any living animal that you can delay neurodegeneration.

"The world won't change tomorrow, but this is a landmark study."

It really is a horrible disease, for everyone involved. This could be amazing if it pans out in the years to come.

Damn, I don't know what I would do if this happened to me.

One part of me wouldn't want to put my wife through that. The possibility of me living a very long time but needing to be completely taken care of, not remembering her or anyone. I wouldn't want to do that to her.

Play around on Khan Academy a bit and you'll do yourselves some good.

I'm relearning middle school math right now to work back up to Calculus.

Probably take on Physics and Chemistry next

+1

It is one of the cruelest diseases in the developed world.

At least cancer doesn't make you have to deal with a ghoulish caricature of the person you loved for a decade or longer....

This is also the first step towards the zombie epidemic.

We won't learn until it is too late.

Physical and mental exercise supposedly decrease your odds. Do crosswords if nothing else.. Read more books. Jog or go the gym 3 or 4 times a week.
Drink less alcohol.

I know what you mean.

I've been having a low grade desire to make sure I didn't lose the knowledge level I spent years attaining.

In the past few days in fact I got a kick in the arse in the form of a situation coming up where a simple calculus based optimization would have made my job easier, but not quite remembering enough to be able to set up the problem quite right to solve.

My mom had a stroke scare a few months ago and now she works crosswords like a madwoman.
