re: "Gravity" Tomatometer Thread: 215 Reviews, 98% Fresh

I will agree to some extent, but as I said earlier in the thread, each film aimed to do certain things. James Cameron's goal of Avatar was not to make a movie, but to launch a new industry and make Hollywood tens of billions of dollars. James Cameron did actively plan for Avatar being on DVD, and by that I mean the 3-DVD. Each and every single part of Avatar was incredibly well thought out and calculating, even if those calculations drive me up the wall. Avatar from the start was intended to last decades so that they could make more 3-D movies and sell 3-D TVs.

Cuaron though, I think his only goal was to make the ultimate cinematic experience. He wanted you to come see this in IMAX and rock your balls off. I don't think Cuaron put much thought at all on it being a home release, since if he did, it would have detracted from the cinematic experience. Cuaron's goal was to make you feel as if you were literally trapped in space and wanted you to constantly clench your butthole and hold your breath. That's a difficult feeling to portray in the living room, since you are completely surrounded by well lit, comfortable, and familiar surroundings. When there was 10 minutes left in the film, I realized I even forgot about my drink and popcorn entirely, which was in my lap the whole time. That was how completely engaged in the environment I became is that I forgot I was not trapped in space with Bullock as well. It is why it is still a great film even if it won't translate as well to DVD: it set out everything that it set out to do to the audience. Simply put, it's incredible film making.

Some of the greatest movies of all-time rely on the unknown. Citizen Kane, considered by most to be the all-time greatest, had a mystery at the very center of its plot.

True, but Citizen Kane's appeal came from the story of Kane's journey. His rise and his fall. There are other little lessons in there, but at this point, they are obvious.

Still don't like how it can be seen as the GOAT when it was panned in its own time and DAT PLOT HOLE

No. Citizen Kane's appeal comes from the fact that it revolutionized filmmaking.

I wish I could have seen that in one of those 7 story tall Imax screens it would have truly been amazing.

Since this seems to be atleast remotely a discussion....

I loved it. There were times I was caught myself holding my breath. I left the movie with an entire box of junior mints
I saw it in IMAX and it was by far THE BEST 3d movie I've ever seen. It held you in the moment the entire time. There was not a single scene where I said " awe that looks real ". The music was good but the silence was more intense than any score they could have used. Hats off to Bullock. I'm not a huge fan, although I laughed my arse off during "The Heat", she was phenomenal.

Fantastic movie. A must see in 3d for sure.

Gravity looks like it will make around $55 million at the box office this weekend. That's pretty incredible considering going into Thursday everyone had its gross being around $35 million or so.

It's also the highest grossing film ever released in October, and a career best for both Bullock and Clooney.

See Hollywood what happens when you actually put thought into a blockbuster instead of just churning out shit?

I would love to see what Cuaron could do with a Star Wars film.

Obviously, I much much much prefer him to make original material, and think he'll have the ability to get financing now... But it would be cool to see.

Wow.

Gonna try and see the late show tonight. I hate 3d. Even if I didn't have seizures I wouldn't like it. But this is the first movie I kind of want to see it in 3d.

It had no competition dude lol I'll admit that I didn't think it would do this well but for whatever reason people suddenly left their disdain behind for 3D and went to see it. The short runtime definitely helped give theaters 2 more showings per auditorium per day.

It won't top $55 millions next weekend, I can tell you that shite for a fact.

I'm with you on that, but this is a film I can't emphasize enough to see in 3-D. I think I've only recommended it on Tron and How to Train Your Dragon as well.

Megamind was the tits in 3D. In a way, I want to see a sequel for that before The Incredibles. A good follow up to The Incredibles is rather easy given the ending that they had.

You took a risk there, considering very few films in the history of cinema have improved on their box office take after a major release the week before.

And while it didn't have competition, people still didn't have to go to the movies this weekend. Box office prognosticators greatly underestimated the public's interest in Gravity.

I hate knowing the time of the movie and knowing how much is left. If you didn't know how much was left its very possible that someone would believe that was the end that thought went through my head.
