re: Ouachita Christian at Union Parish Thurs 10/03 on Cox Sports

Notes about the Ouachita Christian Eagles (From KNOE) LINK

They Move the Chains: Four starters return from an offense that historically lights up the scoreboard. With QB Quin Graves and WR Ahkeem Henderson the Eagles have some proven playmakers. Henderson rushed for 1,024 yards last season with 11 touchdowns. Expect those numbers to increase dramatically as he becomes a major focal point of this offense. Sharing time with Braden Bristo last season, Graves threw for 1,712 yards with 21 touchdowns. WR Reed Robertson is coming off a four reception game in the 1A state championship game. The senior will be counted on to make more plays this season. Sophomores Garryn Chowns and Jake Slaughter looked great in 7 on 7 tournaments over the summer. The biggest question mark for OCS comes on the offensive line as they break in four new starters.

Blitz Patrol: The Eagles defense was outstanding last season as they only gave up 14 touchdowns for the entire year. That will be a hard act to follow considering the Eagles only return one starter. LB Cade Harper is a defensive stud. Harper (6'1, 225) is a field general who racked up 152 tackles with three sacks last season. He is being counted on to have another All-state type year. Junior strong safety Josh Pennebaker and sophomore James Anderson are ready to have breakout seasons. Keep an eye on sophomore LB Ryan Reynolds. He has transferred in from Houston and is the son of former major league pitcher Shane Reynolds.

Cleats to Fill: Braden Bristo and Colby Webb will be missed big time as they combined to score 36 touchdowns last season.

Ace Watch: Graves, Henderson and Harper will certainly be in the running on a weekly basis. Coach Fitzhugh and his staff always find to get the most of their players. Historically, the Eagles have a few role players who emerge as stars on state championship squads.

Must-See Matchup: In addition to a jamboree with Evangel, OCS's non-district schedule will put the young eagles to the test. Dates against rival Sterlington and Farmerville should be entertaining matchups. The October 3rd game against the Farmers has been designated as the LHSAA game of the week and will be televised state-wide. The Mangham Dragons are also looking forward to getting a crack at the defending state champs on October 25th. The Dragons and Eagles have not been in the same district since the mid nineties.

Postseason Prospects: With two straight championships and riding a 30-game winning streak, the Eagles have a target squarely on their back. It is an old cliche, but OCS doesn't rebuild, they reload. The Eagles may stumble a few times in the regular season, but expect them to be in championship form when the postseason rolls around.

Coach Talk: "It is exciting when new kids are going to step in. They have waited for this chance and they are hungry to get their opportunity to shine under the Friday night lights. Success is a journey not a destination. We are not going to talk about another state championship everyday. If you do, then you miss the experience of the journey."
— OCS Head Coach Steven Fitzhugh

re: Ouachita Christian at Union Parish Thurs 10/03 on Cox Sports

Notes about the Union Parish Farmers (Courtesy of KNOE) LINK

They Move the Chains: The Farmers return six starters on offense from last year's team. Coach Joe Spatafora says senior quarterback Jamarious Williams puts the offense on his back. He passed for more than 1,000 yards, rushed for more than 300 yards, and accounted for more than 20 touchdowns last season. Williams is one of the fastest kids on the team. Junior right guard Cazavion Joiner (5'11, 305) was a first team all-state selection in 2012. Spatafora says Joiner has great feet and is the strongest kid on the team.

Blitz Patrol: Seven players are returning from the Union Parish defense last season. Senior defensive tackle Lee Hill is a "go-getter". Coach Spatafora says if you line up in front of Hill he takes it personally and finds a way to run past you. Spatafora says senior defensive end De'Angelo Gatson has a good head on his shoulders and knows how to react well. Junior defensive end Quann Qualls had 10 sacks last year and is extremely fast off the edge.

Cleats to Fill: The Famers have to replace middle linebacker Marquise Armstrong. Hector Sifuentes has to step up to that challenge, but Spatafora says Sifuentes is very smart and is always in position to make the correct plays.

Unsung Hero: Sophomore center Tyler Hollway is very important to the Farmers power running game. Coach Spatafora says Hollway is stronger and faster than he was last season. He likes that Hollway just goes out and plays football and doesn't care that he's an underclassmen.

Ace Watch: Senior linebacker and running back Ronnie Smith is the purest football player on the team. He's physically strong and extremely aggressive which is great for short yardage situations. He's capable of leading the team in tackles and rushing yards

Must-See matchup: A week 1 matchup against Homer is sure to get the Farmers fired up. Coach Spatafora says last year the Farmers were not mentally prepared to play Homer and they lost 40-20. They have to start the season off on the right foot with a win and be prepared to play.

Postseason Prospects: Last year the Farmers finished 10-3 and lost to East Feliciana in the quarterfinals. The Farmers continue to mourn the death of RB Jaleel Gipson. To honor his memory, Coach Spatafora says they are dedicating their season to him. The Farmers blew a 16 point lead in the quarterfinals so Spatafora is stressing finishing games this season with strong 4 quarters. It's been on the whiteboard since December.

Coach Talk: "I can't even explain what everybody is going through. All I know is we have to get back on the field and get busy and continue to work hard and do what we do. We'll put Jeleel Gipson number stickers on our helmets. I told the players to work ten times as hard as Jeleel but that will be hard since his motor ran at 200 percent."
— Union Parish Coach Joe Spatafora.

2016 RB Desmond Turner is one to watch for Union Parish/Farmerville. He's rushed for over 500 yards this season. And QB Jamarius Williams 6-3, 185 is one helluva athlete. Williams is also a top baseball prospect.

My son's Peewee football coach sons play for Farmerville. Both have played a good bit. They are Ben and Waylon Rosson.

Union Parish used to be Farmerville HS. Now that they're Union Parish, they call themselves The U

Currently yes, although if someone files an injunction against the LHSAA before playoffs I think it might get held off. The LHSAA, in their infinite wisdom, changed the format AFTER they asked what division people want to play in.

Makes sense since those of us who grew up there called Farmerville "The Ville". We like shortening things up and putting "The" in front of it so no one confuses us with lesser towns.

"The U" is a hell of a lot better than "The Fighting Farmers" even though the team had a reputation for fighting when I made my bones there back in the 70's.
