UGA Preview from a Clemson Fan

So as UGA was Clemson's opening weekend opponent for this season, I spent most of the offseason studying up on the Dawgs in anticipation of the opening weekend showdown. I also lived in Baton Rouge for a couple years after college so I've always followed LSU as well and figured I might give yal a quick breakdown for anyone who wants to talk football.

LSU Offense vs UGA Defense

First off, all you need to know about UGA's defense is they suck, period. Their passrush has potential and athleticism, but it's not there yet. If LSU's OL plays to their potential Mett should be able to get comfortable. This is one thing I'm curious to see is how they attack Mett. I don't know if it was out of respect for Boyd or fear for their secondary, but they hardly ever brought pressure against Clemson. Will they play it safe or get aggressive at home?

At LB, again they have athleticism on the outside, but they don't have anything elite inside. I expect to see alot of Iso and Power from Copeland, Hill and Co. Don't be surprised to see alot of stuff bounced outside as well. UGA's OLBs seem to overcompensate for their ILB's inefficiencies and leave space on the outside by crashing down to stuff the inside game. Bouncing things outside or some PA flares to RBs/FBs in the flats will have success.

Their secondary has athleticism at the safety level, but the corners struggle. OBJ and Landry should be able to win one-on-one matchups all game long. The safeties have skill, but they're hindered by having to do too much to overcome the deficiencies at corner. The secondary is also far from a sure-thing when it comes to tackling so YAC is something LSU should be able to exploit in this game.

LSU Defense vs UGA Offense

While UGA is classified as a HUNH Spread attack, that's mainly just a lazy moniker given to people who see an offense with big numbers and just assume it must be spread-based. While UGA will go no-huddle at times, it isn't part of its core or system like an Oregon or Clemson. They do it from time to time, but it's mainly just as a way to control tempo and pace.

They're also not a real spread attack. For the most part they prefer 22, 21, or 12 personnel with their second WR really being a TE flexed wide as a WR. You're not going to see much 3/4 WR attacks, especially after they lost Mitchell for the season.

Their strength is obviously Gurley and Marshall. Those two are as good as they come. Gurley, purely from a physical, talent standpoint, is the best RB in the country. I do think, however, his vision and patience leaves a little to be desired. This is where Hill thrives, and you'll notice the difference when watching the two. Marshall is the guy you need to worry about out of the backfield. He's similar to Yeldon in space from that standpoint.

After RB, don't let anyone tell you their next best unit isn't their TEs. This is where they make their living and where they'll test LSU's safeties. The same way Clemson attacked LSU's safeties across the middle and up the seams, UGA likes to do the same with their TEs. They're good too, probably the best duo in the country.

The real key to their offense, however, is Murray, and the real key to Murray is the first 20 minutes of the game. If you allow Murray to get in a rhythm and get comfortable, he can be one of the better QBs in the nation. If you get to him early, however, and get him guessing, he's just a guy.

That's really all there is to it. Get to Murray. If you do that, it's over. Clemson did and he had 2 TOs. South Carolina didn't and he torched them. Ego and Freak need to earn their hype this week and collapse the pocket. I know LSU has potential at DE, but it's time to see it in a big way.

I got LSU by about 10. I think it could get closer to that in the end, but I don't see the game ever being in doubt.

That's all, I know it's TL and no one read it so I'll STFU and GFM now.

I guess you feel you have the right to scout this game as an expert since Clemson destroyed LSU and Georgia by 1 and 3 points respectively.

Lol. You'll learn what vision is when you see Hill run. Gurley's biggest strengths are he looks like Zeus's offspring and is physically more talented than almost anyone one the field.

He overruns plays all the time. Hell against USCe there was a play on the first drive where he was on the FB's hip and could have walked into the endzone, but he tried to cut it up. Patience son.

Nice outsider preview.

UGA will be challenged to stop our run with Hill. Stack the box, our passing game has really improved. We should be able to move the ball.

UGA does have excellent running backs like you said. Also, good point about throwing to their TE's.

We'll see where the $$ moves on the line this week.

LSU won't be phased on the road. Should be a helluva game.
