depends. If you get free and then go set up plantation no, if you get free then work to free other slaves, or just don't go get slaves than you kind are more moral than a slaveowner by default.

Often, dealing with adversity rather than dealing out adversity, makes one morally superior.

What if the individual does neither?

Some of the eunuch slaves of the Ottoman's were very powerful and pretty much ran the show.

There is hardly anything more immoral than the total subjugation of a person to your will, the total deprivation of another's liberty. In a way its worse than murder.

So chances are pretty good the slave is morally superior to his owner.

The problem with that is it negates perception of the age. IOW, was George Washington less moral than Richard Nixon? James Madison less moral than Rod Blagojevich, Dan Rostenkowski? Thomas Jefferson less moral than Jerry Madoff?

Does morality change with the times?

No, there is an enduring moral order.

Insofar as deliberateness is a component of immorality, yes.

I guess it depends on each person's view of morality.

So where does this even minutely changing morality come from?

It changes with each person. Personally, though, when I'm reading history, I don't view moral choices differently just because the acts took place in a different period of time.

Perception of the age? Thomas Paine was man of Jefferson's age & thought .slavery was deplorable & had more enlightened/truthful things to say about Africa than many Whites today(READ Paine's view of Africa/Africans)

John Adams & many others thought it was abhorrent as well & never engaged in it.

The Jefferson's & Washington's' were 'men of their times' is complete bull crap.

I guess for some people it is and for others it isn't. There is no God or other being that has set down the ultimate moral rules for everyone on Earth to follow. "Morality" is just a concept. It helps people deal with each other.
