re: The First Private Gay Law Firm In Louisiana

quote:

No there aren't extra laws but you basically have to break down every single right that marriage gives and do it all step by step. For example. if a gay couple wanted to change their last name after getting married in another state they would have to:

Change their Social Security Card first.
Use that to change your passport
Use those 2 things as forms of ID to get your Drivers License changed since the LA DMV wont accept the marriage certificate.

Some people may not know to do all that so an attorney could advise them. This is a very small example

Sorry...I was more thinking of estate planning and family law..not really administrative stuff. Didn't know they planned on doing that.

I don't really want an emotional lawyer. Iwant someone to advise without letting emotion get involved.

Well even with estate and family litigation, gay people in Nola will probably be more comfortable going to this firm to resolve their issues. Call that marketing, sure, but its not just a ploy. It's their specialization to a specific group of people.

You aren't more vested in things you care deeply about and are more relatable to you over other tasks?

You KNOW I am on your side on these "issues". I am a STRONG supporter of gay rights and gay equality.

However, I seek attorneys assistance precisely for their DETACHED and DISPASSIONATE advice and counsel.

Yes, I get that a "passionate" defense in a criminal or PR situation can be helpful. But, that is just a tool of the trade.

On the subject of the OP....good luck to them. I am all for people being successful. So, I hope it works out for them and their clients

I totally get your point. I guess the way I look at it in this case is if they care more deeply about a specific case/client, they will work harder for them.

That will be their sales pitch. But, I suspect they are very professional (if they are worth retaining at all) and as such, would represent ME with as much vigor and ability as they would you.

They may simply know more about your specific life needs, etc than one that has not "walked a mile".

AND, I do understand the value of one being comfortable with certain folks. I could surely understand that a gay man MAY feel more comfortable speaking about gay "issues" with another gay gentleman. Nothing wrong with that. I'm not suggesting it is true in ALL cases. But, I can understand its value

Interesting that you note that being gay means you are more passionate about topics in this thread, but then bitch about the gays being possibly dismissed for bias in a court case.

There are plenty that are de facto gay firms or sections of firms.

I have a VERY wealthy gay couple as clients. We did some very nice estate planning for them. I understand where MG is coming from...but it's hard not to take offense that the thought I may not work as hard for them because if their orientation is somewhat disheartening. I actually really enjoyed the planning process. Again, I understand the comfortability aspect...but my level of expertise doesn't change based on orientation.

It's going to work on hundreds of other morons who think that prior to this they had nowhere to go.

I never said a word about that situation. Only posted a link to an article. Check your facts.

Where was this ever said? Why are people morons simply for going to an attorney that they may feel more comfortable with?

I totally agree with you here. Practically speaking, the benefits of this firm over another are probably minimal at best. I think in a general sense, the comfortability aspect is why they will get more business from the gay community.

Seems like they see a market need and are trying to take advantage of it. I hope it works out for them.

Almost all law firms specialize in certain areas of law. This isn't a marketing angle. This is what they do.

specializing in somethign is sorta marketing angle, but it is smart.

It seems like in that area homosexual couple would have a lot of unique legal problems.
