Law firms were refusing to do legal work for homosexuals?

quote:

“We want people to know that we are here for the needs of everyone, no matter who, gay or straight, or whoever you may be.”

Sounds like most any law firm. I guess this is an effective marketing tool for them, though.

re: The First Private Gay Law Firm In Louisiana
I must admit that my first thought was to sigh & wonder when we will no longer feel the need to label ourselves & and categorizing our lives by one aspect of our being. Then I read this:

quote:

“We opened trying to do practical needs for the LGBT community. Things like estate planning, family law, situations that same-sex couples may have,” Robb said.

and that makes sense. I'm sure there is a market for the specific detail work.

There's plenty of openly gay lawyers (I'm guessing many not-so openly, as well), but your really are "shocked" at this?
quote:

It’s the first private law firm to focus on the legal needs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered community.

You really think that's such a huge niche market in La. that there would be multiple firms "focusing" on such, to the point you find it shocking it's not so?

Almost all law firms specialize in certain areas of law. This isn't a marketing angle. This is what they do.

What "area of the law" is this?:

the needs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered community.

Not sure why you quoted the word "shocked". All I said was it was hard to believe. I would have thought there would have been a gay lawyer couple or something already doing this in Nola.

It's estate and family law. Open to all people but more specifically targeted to gay people. Not sure why you're getting so emotional here lol

Seems that there would be some specifics to estate planning and such for the gay & lesbian community in a state that doesn't recognize homosexual marriage. Could it be handled by another law firm? Of course! But law firms specialize in a particular area all the time. This is theirs. So what?

There aren't a different set of statutes tailored to homosexuals. Any estate planning firm will know how to plan for a homosexual couple. Like I said..good for these guys...the marketing is obviously working.

Right. I don't have a problem with folks doing what ever works for them marketing wise, but that's what it is, marketing. I don't know why the guy got upset at the suggestion and I still don't get what would possibly be shocking about this being the first.

You couldn't be more wrong. Gay couples in states that don't have gay marriage have 1000 extra steps to get the same rights and privileges that marriage grants. Lawyers devoted to that are needed.

There still aren't any different statutes...and the extra steps you are claiming aren't anything new to estate planning attorneys. What steps in Louisiana are necessary that an estate planning attorney wouldn't know about? Listen...I'm not trying to piss you off...but estate planning isn't all that complicated...just have to know your stuff. I didn't mean to piss you off by pointing out they have an effective marketing strategy.

eta: the vast majority of estate planning issues are federal tax issues anyways. So....

And straight lawyers are capable of handling these issues too. I'm just not seeing that being gay necessarily makes these guys better at this job.

No there aren't extra laws but you basically have to break down every single right that marriage gives and do it all step by step. For example. if a gay couple wanted to change their last name after getting married in another state they would have to:

Change their Social Security Card first.
Use that to change your passport
Use those 2 things as forms of ID to get your Drivers License changed since the LA DMV wont accept the marriage certificate.

Some people may not know to do all that so an attorney could advise them. This is a very small example.

Nobody said they are going to be better than straight lawyers, but they will likely be more "vested" in this work since they are obviously passionate about gay rights.
