Pope on spiritual lives of gays and lesbians

quote:

Pope Francis said the church has the right to express its opinions but not to "interfere spiritually" in the lives of gays and lesbians, expanding on explosive comments he made in July about not judging homosexuals.

quote:

Moreover, if the church fails to find a "new balance" between its spiritual and political missions, the pope warned, its moral foundation will "fall like a house of cards."

quote:

"The church has sometimes locked itself up in small things," the pope said, "in small-minded rules."

Wow: significant shift, no?

The Gay lobby has taken over the Vatican.

Not really sure what that means but it sounds progressive so it must be good.

I'm not a proponent of religion or group rules regarding individual spirituality so I've never paid a great deal of attention to what men like the pope have to say.

What would it mean to "interfere spiritually" in the lives of gays and lesbians?

Serious question, I really don't know what that would mean.

Only in your mind. Pope Francis is simply echoing 2,000+ years of Catholic teaching on the subject of homosexuality. Just because they are gay does not make them less human. They are God's children, just like heterosexuals. HOWEVER, I think you would be hard-pressed getting Pope Francis to say that the practice of homosexuality is not a sin.

Not to my mind. Only in the way that orthodoxy has been pushed over the past few decades by some, and in their zeal, to the detriment of the message of the gospels.

Is he doing any more than rejecting an inquisition for homosexuals? The church maintains its opinions, homosexuality remains a sin? But there is no spiritual police force to make them change their ways, anymore than there is for other sinners.

More interesting IMHO is what is the political mission of the Church? How is he using the term?

Is he suggesting that gay and lesbians should be able to take communion even while "living in sin"? That actually would be a serious shift.

In my view it means the church shouldnt spend time casting stones at them, should welcome them and their belief in God and not get wrapped up in the details of their personal sexuality.

That's actually a good point. We all are sinners, "living in sin", he seems to be saying.

That's not what he's saying at all. You can be gay while not committing the sin of homosexuality. However...the practice of homosexual sex is a mortal sin, that can only be forgiven by sincere penance. It's no different than a man and a woman engaging in premarital sex, likewise a mortal sin.

If you do any of those two things, you are not supposed to take communion until you have asked forgiveness.

So, on a practical note, will there be a change in the recent push by local diocese to remove teachers and principals from Catholic schools because they were discovered to be living with a gay partner, or in some instances only because they were discovered to be gay?

Perhaps more so the latter than the former.

It sounds as though he's advocating for granting sacraments to homosexuals.

Whoa now. Your definition of mortal sin is off the mark.
