IRS was concerned about "Anti-Obama rhetoric" from Tea-Party Groups

quote:

Newly uncovered IRS documents show the agency flagged political groups based on the content of their literature, raising concerns specifically about "anti-Obama rhetoric," inflammatory language and "emotional" statements made by non-profits seeking tax-exempt status.

Wow. They were used to shut down what could have been possible criticism of Obama.

That's pathetic.

Of course they were.

Caesar has a thin skin and tolerates no criticism of his rule.

Ok, I no doubt think that the IRS was targeting these groups because of their political ideology...

But, if they were blatantly being political, wouldn't that void their tax exempt status

Again, they def targeted the anti-obama people and let the pro-obama groups slide, but none of the mentioned groups should be tax exempt.

re: IRS was concerned about "Anti-Obama rhetoric" from Tea-Party Groups
from the article:

quote:

The IRS categorized the groups as engaging in several advocacy-related activities that could have barred them from tax-exempt status, such as lobbying and "propaganda."

But the word "propaganda" doesn't appear in section 501(c)(4), which governs the social welfare status that most Tea Party groups were applying for, said John Colombo, a law professor at the University of Illinois. Instead, it appears in section 501(c)(3), which governs public charities.

"There would be no reason I would think to flag them if it's for a 501(c)(4) status," Colombo said. "That's very odd to me."

One of the articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon was using the IRS to target political opponents. Do you think Congress has the guts to apply the same standard today?

501c(4)'s can be political, but they cant ADVOCATE for a political party.

Unless you believe that promoting concepts like federalism or abortion is political, in which case no 501c(4) should exist.

Do you add extra to your taxes to pay to fedgov?

I have no problem with that....but this was an obvious targeting of groups under the current structure.

So any political group can be tax exempt?

That seems like a huge flaw in the code.

No political group should be tax exempt ever.

Seriously, Obama should be impeached for blatantly using supposedly politically neutral parts of our government to intimidate his opponents. Chicago politics at its finest.
