old swingset and a rotisserie motor from a barbecue pit setup...just weld a hook to the rotisserie motor output shaft, tie the whole thing to an old swingset frame and you are good to go...

Yes you need a bearing if you want it to last.

you are going to have to use gears and a chain.

Why not just get a winch with some tin on one side? That's how the rednecks do it.

That's a stupid way to cook a pig.

I'm sorry you asked too.

re: Pig cooker setup-with a motor
We cook one in a similar manner when we want an all day cooking event at the top.

We use the cheap battery powered gear at ace hardware, so the gearbox you found is likely fine. Depending on how you adjust ur gear box.... We use a metal hook screw so the chain can be easily placed on or removed. It spins as the gearbox runs. You may need to get creative on how you build the arm, as you dont want that gearbox hanging directly over the fire. I used a pipe for an arm- with hooks at both ends.... The gearbox turned the pipe, which inturn turned the chain hooked at the other end. Make sure ur gearbox doesnt run too fast. It wont take much ingenuity. Draw out what you want and go to hardware store for supplies.

I never really understood the value of having a rotisserie turn vertically. Isn't the whole reason you want it to turn is so the juices roll around and around the meat by gravity? With vertical spinning, the juices just run off the same as if it wasn't turning.

St Edward the Confessor church in Metairie has a Cochon de Lait every year where they cook a large number of pigs this way. If you are in the area you may want to stop by to see how the rig up their motors. I went to their web site and the date this year is October 18th.
