Amazon intends to offer long-rumored smartphone for free, according to report

quote:

An Amazon-made smartphone may be made available to customers free of charge when it launches, according to a new report today. Jessica E. Lessin, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, cites anonymous sources familiar with the retailer's plans, and they say that Amazon wants to sell the smartphone free of charge whether or not it's sold with a carrier contract. It's not yet clear if a subscription to a service like Amazon Prime would be necessary to get the phone. The sources are apparently skeptical that Amazon will be able to pull off a free smartphone, considering the company would have to strike difficult deals with both manufacturers and carriers to make it happen.

Like the Kindle Fire, it's expected that an Amazon smartphone would run what's known as a "forked" version of Android. The device would use the open-source operating system without any of Google's own apps — including the Play store. This means any Amazon-made smartphone would have to compete directly with other Android devices, and it's said that part of the reason why the company has taken so long to get its phone to market is because many manufacturers have signed agreements to only produce Android products approved by Google.

Free isn't cheap enough if that's the case.

BezoS won't stop until he rules the world. Between him and Elon Musk I think the next few years are going to be really interesting with innovations and the way we currently do things.

God help us all if the day ever comes when Amazon is expected to start posting profits like other 20 year old businesses.

Bold move. They have been taking losses on the Kindle Fire, which has primarily been used just to get market share. It may have trouble getting off the ground if they can't get the full support of 3rd-party app developers (assuming that only certain Android apps can work, like the Kindle Fire).

I love Amazon, but I'm not so sure about this move. They need to decide what they truly are. The Fire was already pushing things, this is going a step further. Not sure I like it.

Amazon reinvests like 99% of its money back into shite like this and building new distribution centers. If they wanted to they could stop growing and produce a fine profit each quarter.

Having said that, their stock is so overvalued it's insane.

Give away the hardware to get the recurring revenue.

Not a new concept, but not usually seen at the consumer level.

I don't get why they need this. I purchase a ton of shite through the apps. Why be concerned with how people get to the site.

They really are visionaries that's for sure.

Musk has tons of great ideas for the future, and Bezos has changed the game with Amazon and it's services.
