Urlacher: Bears had a "designated dive guy" who faked injuries

LINK

quote:

Faking injuries was part of the Bears’ gameplan to slow fast-paced offenses in recent years, former linebacker Brian Urlacher said Tuesday.

Urlacher said a Bears coach would simulate a swimmers’ diving motion with his arms from the sideline and the player “would get hurt.”He said it was beneficial on long drives or early in the season when defenders were more easily gassed.

He said he wouldn’t name the coach who pantomimed in the order.

Curiously, he also said the Bears weren’t coached to fake injuries, per se.

“It wasn’t coached,” he said, “but it was part of our game plan.”

It wasn't coached, but the coach signaled to the player when to dive? Lol

Pfft?

This was coming. With all of the offenses running no huddle and not allowing substitutions defenses were going to find ways to "adapt."

On par with staying on the offensive player after a tackle when they are in their two minute offense and running low on time. Bush league, but it happens all the time.

Pathetic. They, just like soccer, need to institute a rule where a player who gets "injured" has to sit out of the game for a certain amount of time and it should be a significant amount.

I can't believe these guys are so gutless as to get on board with disgracing themselves like that.

It was from a discussion about Cal being pissed at Northwestern, when Cal was actually disciplined in 2010 for doing the same thing against Oregon.

If the offense feels they get an advantage by hurrying plays; i have no problem with the defense doing this. I wouldn't have a problem with injured players having to sit the remainder of a drive or for the NFL to mandate a certain period between first downs (similar to how the clock stops in college) to allow for full substitutions.

I agree, I have no problems with defenses doing that

I know someone on the Cajuns that was this guy in Hud's first year.

He was part of the special teams unit.

Uhhhh, so does LSU. And so does every team in college and NFL.

Make it the rest of the drive. It should all but eliminate this type of stuff, and if a player actually is injured to the point where he needs medical attention on the field and the game to stop, he should probably be out for at least the series anyway to be checked on, and then he can go back in on the next one.

so does LSU

pretty sure when anthony johnson got "hurt" later in the TCU game, it was a fake to slow things down and give the D a breather

Yep, the field was littered with LSU players for the Oregon game.

Cmon urlacher. Loved the dude playing the game, and everybody knows its done. A few teams like the giants are blatant as hell about it. But have a little more respect for the game than to walk away and try to make news with bull shite like this. just take the money and walk away

You can see him starting to walk off on his own, look at the sideline, and drop to the ground.

Urlacher is butthurt at the bears for the $2 million offer that "forced" him into retirement.

re: Urlacher: Bears had a "designated dive guy" who faked injuries
I see this as a continuation of the sayers/urlacher feud. Sayers always was criticizing the bears when urlacher was there, now that he is not he is stealing sayer's "nobody gives a shite what i have to say so I'm going to say some crazy things to get headlines" routine...only he's better at it because he has a media platform and he's much more interesting and his future HOF induction won't be because of one or two seasons and a shitload of pity.

you lose again sayers, go DIAF.

I'mfairly certain faking injuries has been part of football since it's inception.

Soccer already accounts for it with stoppage time. Soccer doesn't need to change, but thanks for the awesome suggestion
