Michigan has a wealthy sugar daddy

Announcement from their athletic director, David Brandon:

quote:

I am excited to formally announce a transformational and historic gift for Michigan Athletics from alumnus Stephen M. Ross. As you have seen and heard over the past year, we have impressive plans for the reinvention of our Athletic Campus. Steve shares in our vision for an Athletic Campus that will provide every student-athlete the best resources to compete at the highest level. It is because of his commitment and this shared vision that he has provided us with a lead gift of $100 million towards our fundraising campaign.

In appreciation of his incredible generosity, pending approval by the U-M Board of Regents we will be naming the athletic campus after Steve, and from this point forward it will be known as the Stephen M. Ross Athletic Campus.

We are honored to have Steve as a part of the Michigan Athletics family. Steve is a real estate developer in New York City and the owner of the Miami Dolphins. He has long been a generous donor to the University of Michigan, providing meaningful gifts to name the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and to athletics in support of the Michigan Stadium expansion and the Stephen M. Ross Academic Center. Steve has also contributed an additional $100 million to the Stephen M. Ross Business School as part of this gift. This combined gift represents the single largest donation in U-M history.

Without passionate supporters like Steve and yourself, we would be unable to achieve ambitious goals such as our transformational facilities plan. I truly appreciate your commitment to our program and your support of our vision for the future of Michigan Athletics. I hope Steve's generosity is an inspiration to you and I encourage you to learn more about how you can invest in our 31 teams and over 900 student-athletes by visiting support.mgoblue.com.

Thank you and Go Blue!

Damn. $200M gift.

For the record: LSU has one gift over $100M in its history and the next largest is $25M.

Cool. Still won't be able to recruit with Bama, LSU or, most importantly, Ohio State.

We make up for it with every Thibodeaux, Dagobert, and Homer giving a dollar or two.

In about 20 years this campus is going to be University of Michigan - Ross Campus of Ann Arbor. The business school is already something to marvel at, can't imagine what this money is going to do to the athletic campus.

Les Wexner gave Ohio State $100 million back in 2011 but I think the majority of it went to the medical portion of campus. Giving that same donation twice is OT type of money.

re: Michigan has a wealthy sugar daddy
One of the common arguments for not paying players is that the smaller schools can't compete. This type of donation is way more of a disadvantage to those small schools than paying players would be.

Gareth Bale was just sold to Real Madrid for roughly 130 million USD (the biggest transfer ever), and the world shook. This guy just donated 200 million bucks to Michigan.

Smaller schools not being able to compete is why there are four NCAA football divisions. Smaller schools being unable to compete is a problem that was solved decades ago.
