How accurate are those things? I'm intrigued.

Mine is accurate enough for anything I want to do with it which is mostly shooting snakes, targets, cans, etc. I have a 10/22 and a CZ452 for squirrel hunting but I could use my M&P 15-22 if I had to.

I liked the Colt better. Felt more like an AR than the S&W. To each his own though.

Browning Semi-Auto .22 if you are looking for an automatic (although I'm not sure I would get a semi auto for a kid).

Browning BL .22 or a used Winchester 9422 if you want a lever gun.

Another T-bolt if you want a bolt action.

I have the Marlin, and Ruger 10/22. Both shoot well, but many more options for the Ruger. If you are going to keep it as a 22 get the Marlin, if u want to be able to trick it out get the Ruger

The three that I would suggest in a semi-auto would be:

1. Browning Auto .22. Best semi auto .22 made and you can break it down to two pieces.

2. 10/22
3. Smith & Wesson 15-22

The first just depends on how much you want to spend. My kids shoot a 15-22 mostly and it is a great gun and the adjustable stock is perfect.
The 10/22 is a great gun as well and I would put it ahead on the 15-22 just because.

I don't know the skill level it requires to break into 2 halves but the new 10/22 Takedown looks pretty sweet and compact.

I guess it's an option to consider too.

Pull the little pin back and twist.

That's it.

That's not it. Forgot you have to unscrew a couple of turns a bolt on the barrel that's makes the marriage of the two tight. Then pull back the pin and twist the barrel.

I have a Marlin 795 (basically the magazine-fed version of the tube-fed Model 60) and I would highly recommend it. The thing is dead nuts accurate right out of the box (moreso than my 10/22). You can get a set of tech sights or a nice scope and a box of ammo and still be out less $ than the Ruger as well.

re: What .22 Rifle to Buy?

CC,
There are all kinds of good answers, but the single best answer is the Ruger 10/22. Not only is the unaltered 10/22 a good gun, but it IS easy to carry out a few modifications (recoil buffer, mag drop lever and target trigger are the most common) that improve the gun. Get a basic 10/22 that he can bang up w/o having to worry about messing up the nice wood, such as is found on the Browning. Since he's an 11 y/o boy, he's going to give it some scratches and dings. Get a synthetic stock and don't worry about it. As he grows, you can always cut off some of the buttstock to get the appropriate length of pull. He'll prolly want some high capacity mags to play w/ once or twice, then he'll put them away. Get a low powered variable scope, e.g. 2-7X. Try shooting w/ and w/o the barrel band. Both of my 10/22's that came w/ a barrel band shoot BETTER w/o it. Bought my son a 10/22 a few years ago and he's loved it.

When I read that, the image that popped into my mind was one of the scenes from "Caddyshack" where Bill Murray's character was going to battle against the ground squirrels!!

"Licensed to kill squirrels, by the government of the United Nations. Man free to kill squirrels at will."

Lots of good info in this thread, thanks. I am still leaning towards the 10/22, but the OB has opened my eyes to other good options. I guess we will go fondle them and see what fits & feels best to make our final decision. Strange that he already has a deer rifle, but not a .22. I may have created a monster.

You can spend money on one of the youth bolt actions - my youngest had a Savage Cricket (which I really like the peep sights - the rifle is just a little small for a grown man to shoot), but I think you'll get a year or 2 out of it.

If I had it to do over again, I'd have gotten a 10/22 - you can have 3 or 4 of those and not have "too many".
