re: Your Meat Addiction is Destroying the Planet

quote:

To produce 1 pound of beef, the friendly neighborhood farmer will need 13 pounds of grain and an estimated 2,500 gallons of water. If a 1,000-pound cow yields 600 pounds of beef, that cow used 1.5 million gallons of water and 7,800 pounds of grain.

LOL What?
I can tell you without any hesitation that a steer does not need 1.5 million gallons of water before it goes to market. (If a cow drank a barrel of water a day it would have to live to be almost 98 years old to consume 1.5 million gallons.)

The grain total would be 156 sacks of corn. I don't know any farmers that use 3 pallets of corn per cow either.

1,000 pound cow = 13,000 pounds of grain which requires a lot of water to grow to be eaten by the cow. I suspect that's where the water usage calculation comes from, not thirsty cows.

So the chickens are eating less and weigh more, while we're eating 3 times more chicken and less beef and pork and weigh more. Coincidence?

I'm pretty sure we would not have evolved as a species with anything like our current cognitive abilities without the nutritional boost gained from eating meat

So, I say no matter what happen from here on out it's been a pretty damned good trade off.

Chickens aren't given steroids. That's come up a few times on here and it's a myth. Genetics are responsible for the way chickens grow so fast and large now.

I'm with you on the first statement though.

ETA: The entire article stinks of some agenda, but I really don't give enough fricks to track it down. Meat is grown as efficiently as possible right now. Subsistence farming is a nice thought but asserting it's more efficient than mass operations that utilize every inch of space and every last drop of the resources they use is funny.

There have been great advances in animal breeding. Of course we have bred our chickens to grow better - it's called progress.
FWIW this is one thing LSU and other ag colleges don't get enough credit for.

I call BS on the four farms in the US only way that works if you count every poultry house of a particular brand as a single farm.

That's exactly what they do. They want people to think there is a single place where there are these four large farms owned by the evil companies. It just sounds scarier.

They just ignore that Tyson has business all over the county and produce tons of jobs all around the country.

And the chicken thing is misleading because they don't give chickens steroids. There growth is just genetics and that is a good thing.

Why can't the libtards just eat their rabbit food and stay to themselves? More meat for me...get out of the way.

The fact that environmentalists and animal rights activist are mentioned is hilarious. "The Verge" seems like a legitimate website that only presents the facts and I'm a French Model.

Bingo.
This would solve 30-40% of their problem.

Water doesn't leave this planet, ever. It seems to stay here as 78% of this planet is water.

There is no accountability on information put out on the internet. People are gullible or tend to believe shite that supports their agenda. This thread is a great example of how fricked up things are.

Det. Thorn: It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!
