25 Egyptian Police Executed in Sinai

LINK /

I know I'm going to open a can of worms here, but I think it makes a good debate topic to start the work week.

Those of us who study history know that Israel took over the Sinai Peninsula after the Six-Day War in 1967, then returned it to Egypt as part of their peace treaty in 1979 (and by 1982 had physically removed itself from there).

Given that the Sinai is a major route to funnel arms to the Gaza Strip, here's today's question: Did Israel make a mistake in 1979-1982, by agreeing to return the Sinai to Egypt in exchange for peace?

With the mood the Egyptian army is in right now - that might not have been the wisest move by the militants.

As to your question - the Sinai is a bear to manage, it's mainly desert and Israel just didn't have the manpower to effectively secure it, anyway. Narrowing the border (shortening the lines, as some would describe it) was smart, and particularly as the working relationship with Egypt allowed Israel to focus their energies on the more substantial threat by Syria.

I'm with Ace, I'm not sure why they'd want it. It's much easier to police that narrower border. Besides, they have a strong working relationship with the Egyptian army and the Egyptians have proven fairly reliable about smuggling issues.

Wait someone saying Israel gave too much back? Where were you then? Israel doesn't need Sinai.

A part of your history is wrong as Israel had returned the Sinai earlier than '82, more like 78. A glimpse at the Camp David Accords will prove it.

You are correct, I misread the Wikipedia article. The treaty was signed in 1979, though it was not until 1982 that Israel had left the Sinai completely.

The OP has been edited accordingly.

I was given a bit of food for thought about the things going on in Egypt now. The homes and businesses of Christians in Egypt are being marked with red paint and then vandalized a la Kristalnaccht,

It is worse than that. They are killing Christians in a wholesale scale right now. It is really, really ugly.

The manner of a tie in was of that of the Book of Esther in Ancient Persia which was intended to be a final solution to the Jews of that era.
