He's 100% jackass and stupid for doing this, but I think he should be able to profit from his name, his image, his celebrity.

college football is a fraud.

Since very few of the "student" athletes in major college football could apply to college or make it though college without tutors doing their homework for them...it's a joke.

Under current rules, yes, but the rules are absurd...but that fits with college football.

t is really simple to just have that liberal mind set of lets pay them because they are young kids that universities and the NCAA take advantage of. but if you start publicly paying players then whats next?

I dont agree with paying players, but boy is this a terrible argument to make.

If players are going to get paid, there should be a separate league outside of collegiate athletics. The stars would go semipro, and the student athletes would be just that. No way should there be a school branded semipro team.

Here come your best money can buy LSU Fighting Tigers! GTFO. College is for learning, not being a pro athlete.

agreed. not the ncaas fault theres not a better alternative for the student athletes that dont want to be students.

also, for all of the "players should be compensated" people.....do yall not realize how much tuition money they use? how much rent money they use? how much food money they use? and the few hundred bucks they are given per month?

they make well over 100k in 4 years

Sharecropping was awesome.

Lol if you think he'd go to prison for not reporting that income on his 1040

First, I know a lot more about this than you.

Second, I know he would not actually go to prison, but not reporting the income is tax fraud and prison is an option.

Don't be such a "literalist" know it all.

I am still convinced nothing will happen to this kid. The NCAA will basically allow Texas A&M handle it internally. And A&M will basically find a way to sweep this all under a rug. Even if it means getting these ppl saying that they got paid to recant their story.

He is a college kid without a job so I doubt he files at all. As long as he doesn't submit a tax return at all he should be fine, right?

I am not familiar with that in each state. But i do believe there is a minimum where even if you do not work, you must file a tax return if you receive an amount greater than (x). Where (x) can vary from state to state.

If he is making money selling autographs he has income and if it is a significant amount he has to report it.

If it is a couple of thousand bucks, it will be under the radar. But nothing he does is under the radar.

He would not go to prison. That was why I put the laughy face in my first post. But he could be in IRS hot water if he doesn't report the earnings.

My main point is that it puts him in a tough position.

He either has to fess up and report it on his 1040 or deny it and file a false 1040. I'd fess up. Lose your eligibility but stay out of prison

Neither he doesn't have to report it until next April of '14, he will have turned pro by then.

Agree.

Even if the income was earned in 2012 he has until October of this year to file. By the time it works through the system, he is long gone. And if it is 2013 income he actually has until October 2014.

Federal tax is not state specific. I think the minimum for this year is around $10,000.

Ya I didn't go back and read the specifics. He's good until October '14 then.

I was not that serious about this in the first place. But the IRS is a powerful weapon.
