This is the main problem with this kid. he doesnt know when to shut up and lay low. Going to class is too much exposure, showing up at the manning camp on time, too much trouble. but sitting courtside, hitting UT frat parties, throwing out first pitches, paid autograph signings, and twitter spats he can make time for.
He'll make it impossible for the ncaa to let him walk.

There's nothing inherently wrong with Manziel profitting from his own autographs. Where it gets sticky is how do you control the situation if things like this are allowed by the NCAA.

Agents would be all over this, offering kids thousands of dollars to represent them then using autographs as a cover with no way to police them.

Why bother controlling it?

Stephen A is even jumping ship off JFF's bandwagon.

Yeah, agents could never corrupt something like college football. Not too mention what happens when reports surface about point shaving and players getting hundreds of thousands of dollars.

ESPN is beginning the hype machine to suspend JFF for the entire season.

If JFF is gone, hes gone for good. I dont see a "suspension" for this. It would be a flat out, your eligibility is gone

Lol you think they haven't corrupted it already? You still buy into the false narrative that college football is played by amateurs?

Allowing players to earn money makes it less likely they would throw games or shave points.

If some unscrupulous person wants to pay a player to throw a game how does the autograph thing play into it at all? That money would be paid under the table either way. Paying off players to throw a game can happen under the current system.

having ESPN against you is a big problem... they can certainly push whatever narrative they want, and the majority of other media and fans will take that stance (by and large). The timing of the story also just makes me shake my head at how ESPN operates... they ran the Magazine story surrounding Johnny and his dad late last week (includes talking about signing autographs)... then the drop this bomb on Sunday night (the night before first practice).

It comes across as very tabloid-ish, IMO.

For the most part, sure. Coaches and the NCAA have actually done a good job keeping agents out of college football. How do you do that if you allow thousands of dollars for "autographs"?

I'm sure kids are gettting benefits under the current system, but things change dramatically when you start talking 5 or 6 figures.

Not when they is no payscale and players only make money from their image or autographs.

I'm saying the media/fan speculation that would come with "autograph payments" would be unbearable. Then you also have to worry about protecting these athletes when they are thrown big dollars.

Because it would turn CFB into semipro football. Forget agents, boosters would pay for the top athletes via "autographs."

Imagine if a booster gave Cam $200,000 for his autograph.

tax filings

If he did receive a significant amount of money for autographs he may be in trouble.

He either has to fess up and report it on his 1040 or deny it and file a false 1040. I'd fess up. Lose your eligibility but stay out of prison.

On the other hand, even if it was done in 2012, he has until October 15th to file. By the time anything came out the season would be done.

also, for all of the "players should be compensated" people.....do yall not realize how much tuition money they use? how much rent money they use? how much food money they use? and the few hundred bucks they are given per month?

they make well over 100k in 4 years

Explain that logic.

Obviously players are receiving payments for their autographs already. Unless you want to believe Manziel is the first and only case of this.

If you take this out of the shadows, & make it allowable if they report it, then it is less likely to be abused or used as a cover for other things.

So 25k a year? I'm pretty sure last year alone Manziel was worth considerably more to A&M than 25k, heck even more than 100k.

this is true but thats a damn slippery slope when you pay different players more or less based on performance because then it becomes a bidding war that would ruin college football
