Industries that are exempt from Antitrust Laws

Such as labor unions, electrical companies, natural gas companies, agricultural and fishery marketing associations, banking and insurance industries, and export trade associations.

What if these were no longer legal monopolies, would the country be better off?

Well, as you indirectly stated in your post, monopolies are only possible with government involvement.

You question actually should be: Would the country be better off if there were true free markets and competition?

To which I'd say: hell fricking yes.

It just seems unfair that these laws dont apply to certain people or groups.

Imagine if other private banks outside of the international banking system could bid on printing our money. Not that I want that but you know.

Better question Wiki.

How much influence did these "titans" of industry have in the early 20th century on these antitrust laws to get themselves exempt?

I'm pretty sure both of those industries are NOT exempt from anti-trust laws.

Several bank mergers have been disallowed because it was judged they would have controlled too much of the banking market within their geographical areas.

The same for insurance company mergers, as I recall.

Do you have a link saying those industries are exempt from anti-trust laws? If so, I'd like to read it.

That is exactly what I am saying.

A monopoly is simply not possible in a free market.

Yeah i'm pretty sure we had to enact anti trust laws for the simple fact that monopolies are not only possible in the free market but in fact occur with some frequency.

I'm sure that's what you've been taught but that doesn't mean it's true.

If we're going to have this debate, then please define monopoly for me. I'd prefer we debate based on a proper definition of monopoly.

Pete Rozelle had the give New Orleans an NFL franchise to get their anti-trust exemption approved.

Why don't you define it?

Sure. I'm assuming you'll find the "Wiki" definition more than acceptable.

In law, a monopoly is a business entity that has significant market power, that is, the power to charge high prices.[4] Although monopolies may be big businesses, size is not a characteristic of a monopoly. A small business may still have the power to raise prices in a small industry (or market).[5]
