re: Rolling Stones and Tsarnaev cover: I don't get the big deal
The dude looks like the frontman for some hit boy band, not a "normal person." If they wanted the "normal person among us" angle then they could have gotten some kind of a random family photo album type shot. They explicitly chose to make him look like some bad boy daredevil and romanticize his terrorism, knowing full well that there's already a perverse group of individuals who believe he's innocent because omgz hes 2cute 2beevil!!11!

It's been Rolling Stone's MO to be 2edgy and this is just fitting into it

EDIT: For reference, here is a picture of TIME's cover of the Columbine killers when TIME attempted to do a similar take on a similar case. This is how you do "they were normal people among us" properly, not this amateurish pop icon style model shot.

Those kids look like they're in a cologne ad. Not sure what your hang up is with a freaking picture.

A cologne ad?

Interesting take.

re: Rolling Stones and Tsarnaev cover: I don't get the big deal
I am not a dumb guy. But I cannot fully understand the outrage.

First of all, RS did not pose the guy. They just plucked one of the existing photos of him. The photo is in no way intended to lessen or minimize the evil of what he did, but it does show him as he was perceived by many people who knew him. And he turns out to be, as RS calls him, a "monster".

The problem isn't with RS, imo. It's with how people choose to interpret the cover. If someone is stupid enough to be enamored by the guy or show him some type of sympathy because of a photo, that is all their problem. If someone is offended because the photo didn't show him in looking more sinister, that's their problem as well.

You know exactly who I was referring to.

I think the big deal is it mimics the Jim Morrison cover

Image: http://www.bloomberg.com/image/iqTuuJmVqLIs.jpg

And it is coupled with the fact that there are thousands of young girls who have taken up for the scum bag and this just goes to further push the celebrity image.

I think a more appropriate cover would have been a slightly different picture and then pictures of his victims too.

A lot over nothing, maybe... But just like RS has the right to post this picture, the businesses have the right to refuse to sell it.

He said the same thing I was going to say. How the hell does sticking the pictures of the victims around them evoke an image of a cologne ad?

I get simply not being bothered by the cover (after all, it's Rolling Stone, their MO is 2edgy), but to act like it's not glorifying Tsaenaev is just plain obtuse.

Dumb is dumb. The image of a rock star versus that of a criminal trying to avoud capture. WTF is so hard to fathom about the at all?

It's a head shot. They have a similar hairstyle and aren't smiling. But I'm not sure the cover "mimics" anything.

Because I was early referring to the professional head shots of the two shooters.

Please explain again how calling the guy a "monster" on the cover is "glorifying him". Is it really that you think the photo cancels out the message? See, I think it amplifies the message. This ordinary looking college aged kid was a fricking murderer.

I'm pretty sure that if you're not actively trying to get offended, you won't get offended. Otherwise, you could get mad.

Hmmm . . . well, no doubt, if you have a pre-conceived notion about the motives of RS, in particular, AND you wish to be offended . . . then, yeah, I can understand that person being offended.

ETA: From a stylistic and graphic standpoint, RS has a lot more information on its cover about the content of any given issue. There's really no practical way to have put photos of the victims on the cover.

So, seriously, what, from an editorial standpoint, was the "message" that RS was sending?

You're basically arguing they should not have shown the guy before he turned into a fricking killer

This would make me feel more way more sympathy for the guy than the RS cover.

I can understand that sentiment. I'd rather examine what the cause of it all was. But to each his own both sides have their pros and cons
