Red-light cameras reduce crashes in Baton Rouge, study says

quote:

It’s been five years since Baton Rouge launched a traffic light camera program, and data released last week by the camera company and the city-parish shows drops in both traffic crashes and violations at the selected intersections

quote:

Baton Rouge’s Department of Public Works evaluated intersections where traffic cameras were installed in 2008 and 2009 by comparing the average number of crashes in the years before and after the cameras took effect.

The study showed a sharp decline in right-angle crashes — considered the most dangerous type of collisions — but also showed slight increases in rear-end crashes.

quote:

. The right-angle crashes at those locations dropped to a combined average of 41 per year for the years 2009 through 2011, or a decline of 40 percent

quote:

In the same time frame, rear-end collisions for the designated intersections increased by 4 percent and total injuries for all collisions dropped 15 percent

quote:

Of 19 intersections that still have traffic cameras, 13 showed reductions in traffic light violations between the first year they were installed and 2012, according to data provided by American Traffic Solutions, the company overseeing the city-parish camera program.

I'm curious what the number of increase in rear-end collisions per year is. If it's greater than 41, then the cameras are actually causing an increase in the number of total accidents.

The percentage increase or decrease of each individual type of accident is not a good measure of the trend in total accidents.

From the same link

quote:

Price acknowledges that road construction work across the parish, which has been particularly active in the past three years, could skew the numbers

quote:

John Bowman, spokesman with the National Motorists Association, said his organization opposes the use of red light cameras because they don’t effectively improve safety and are employed as a revenue generator for cities.

quote:

He said cities could improve intersection safety by lengthening the yellow light time.

“That’s been shown to be very effective in reducing the number of accidents and the number of violations as well,” Bowman said. “You can take cameras out of the equation entirely if traffic safety is the true goal.”

They give number for the amount of right-angle crashes, which is a respectable decrease, yet they only give a percentage of rear-end crashes. I'm not saying they are, but if they want to look like they aren't hiding something then we need hard numbers and not percentages to compare.

The 15% injury reduction is nice, I give it that. Still, red light and especially speed cameras can DIAF.

quote:

“If you put a cop at an intersection and he writes 10 tickets one week, and the next week he writes no tickets, well that’s because everyone knows that he’s there,” Arnold said. “You’ve only changed behavior for that particular intersection.”

Exactly. They need to compare intersections with other intersections. Let's see if cameras have changed accident number system wide or just at the intersections with cameras.

I'm going to need an independent study before I believe any of this.

Oh really? Name two entities that make money off of the cameras and would like to paint them in a good light.

I'll wait. Maybe you can find two more.

EDIT: Also, 6/10. You win a razor to shave your troll knuckles. I bit. Well played, sir.

Im actually going to side with the red light cameras here.

I moved here shortly after the red light cameras went up. I was an avid motorcyclist and had a 6th sense for certain things like someone about to run a red light. People in this state can bitch all they want about the red light cams but its definitely helped. Go to a state without and its a "no cop, no stop" mentality. Ive been there, done that, lost some good friends due to red light runners.

I have a couple in Laff that I am not paying. Got notice the other day that I can be taken to court and/or booted as well them sending it to the credit agency. Not worried about that because I refute that but what is this new BS with court and getting booted? Just threatening talk?
