Best Depeche Mode Album?

Never gave them a serious listen before, but now I want to. Was wondering which album of theirs is the best representation of their sound/style or which one y'all would recommend as the best introduction into their catalog.

also their two compilations The Singles 81>85 and The Singles 86>98 are outstanding, comprehensive panoramas of their best collected work

Violator first (no brainer)

Music for the Masses
Songs of Faith and Devotion
Black Celebration
ULTRA (best post Alan Wilder in my opinion)

Then give the most recent one Delta Machine a listen.

Violator.

The rest you can just melt into "101" and be done with it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I listened to Music for the Masses and it was legit. Violator is next. Any opinions on Speak and Spell?

Very, very, very synth poppy and truly amazing that the band grew into who they became after hearing that album. Couple of synth pop gems on there...Photographic, Just Can't Get Enought, Tora Tora Tora. For the record, the lead songwriter for Depeche on Speak and Spell is Vince Clarke who left the band to later form Yaz(Yazoo) and Erasure.

Eh, I don't think i'd like it if that's the case. The draw to DP for me is the dark and reflective nature of the stuff I've heard. I figured it'd be a darker album, that's why I asked.

Songs of Faith and Devotion and Black Celebration will be your favorites if this is what you are drawn to with DM music.

In their defense, they were 18 year old kids riding the electronic wave that Kraftwerk started at that time. Thankfully, they matured quickly and the darkness ensued

Good recommendation if you just want to hear the hits. But it's worth it as well to give full albums a listen to capture the mood and flow of the songs from that particular era which is how I prefer to listen to bands I am just discovering

I agree, completely.
BTW: Listening to Violator right now and it's incredible. I'd have to say "Blue Dress" is my favorite song, it's beautiful.

Blue Dress might be my favorite DM song.

World in my Eyes, Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence. That album brings it.

My other favorites not on Violator:
Never Let Me Down Again
Barrel of a Gun
Never Let Me Down Again Aggro Mix (it's an instrumental but it's badass. Especially when it's played with the right system )

I agree. what's interesting many bands that hang around long enough to have sold multiple albums look back at what sold what you liked, their biggest or most popular albums violator & songs of faith & devotion both produced by mark ellis the remainder of their albums were a mix of producers. That did ok but not great. Like RUSHs bet selling albums Terry Brown was the producer from fly by night to signals that was their best years when he left so did the sales engineers/producers are the keys to the sound.
