No one is saying he should be...they're asking will he. You know....since Deen was headline news for a word she said 20 years ago in a private conversation.

No, I personally have never felt even a twinge of anger over words. Now, if my girlfriend was hurt by the words I would take action. Not because of the words but because of her pain.

Well you should tell her she's stupid and words shouldn't offend her then.

I couldn't agree more. The only way for a word to hurt you is for you to internalize that word and in effect cause the harm to yourself. Its a self inflicting pain and it makes no sense.

People get offended by things man. Words carry meaning to people.

I don't get all bent out of shape over it, but people do.

You've already pointed out that your girlfriend might feel 'pain' from it.

Only if that person allows it too. The initiator of the slur is meaningless in that process. Its all on you at that point. Either you respect yourself enough not to allow a word to do you harm or you don't have that respect for yourself.

This just proves the liberal double standard in this country. Alec Baldwin says something offensive about gays, no one cares because Baldwin is an outspoken liberal.

Paula Deen, a southerner, admits to using the n word once 20 years ago and it's "SHE MUST BE DESTROYED!"

The media in this country has become sickening.

FWIW - I don't think either one should have been a major news story.

You definitely wouldn't be offended if someone said your mother/wife/daughter was a sloppy slut that gets dp'd by strangers regularly.

What you posted and casually using any word not directly intended for any one person are totally different things.

So Mel Gibson would be forgiven by now.

I agree with you. But he said nobody should be offended by words.

I'm saying that they can be offensive, and people can be hurt by them, angered by them.

I wasn't trying to imply that what I said and casually using a word were the same. Just using some hyperbole to make a point. Exaggerating a little bit to show that you can't say 'words never hurt anyone'. Because they do.

I agree.

Personal insults are not just words. It's the intent behind it that causes issues.

Progressive logic;

AB - He said it but he is one of us so he really did not mean it (because he is one of us and we would never mean it even if we did say it). No problem here.

PD - She said it and she is not one of us so she really meant it (because she is not one of us so she is evil and hides her actions well). Fire her, burn her house to the ground and destroy her.

ETA: The more I see this thought process in use, the more I feel I am still in high school, watching the herd mentality of the "cool kids" as they condemn someone who is not part of their clique.

Just Alex being Alex. And proof that no one is really ever offended by these "slurs". They just choose to act offended when it fits their political agenda.
