Loved ones of addicts don't get enough praise. They stick around through the hard times and suffer just as much as the addict but don't even get to enjoy the act of being high/drunk, they just get the pain.
Amen to that.

I found I didn't need meetings and It's been 6 years now, so...
I would have no problem going back and actually, after reading all of this, I think I may go to a couple to try and encourage people.

Been sober over 10 yrs now and I really take it one day at a time. So I don't have to quit drinking or drugging forever ,but just for today.

I appreciate the love but he is kind of correct. I don't take offense though because I will tell anyone what I take. If I can have an easier and happier life by taking substances that relieve my stress and don't interfere with my day to day life I don't feel the need to apologize for it. The doses I take are VERY low and I don't even notice them for the most part.

If you do, you should find a big book meeting to attend. They are generally better than discussion meetings. (At least for me) BB meeting are much more solution based than general discussion meetings.

I so hate those cliches. More than anything, I hate them. BUT, this one is so true. As soon as you stop thinking about tomorrow, next week, next year or 10 years down the road it really becomes easy

Me too. But more than 17 years later, I find that it works. Simple, yet profound.

And everyone else! My friends, family and employer all know everything about me and since they actually know me IRL they know they have nothing to worry about. I have never stolen anything or lied about what I do and IMO those things are what make "druggies" pieces of shite.

I don't buy in to much of the AA/NA stuff tbh... It just isn't for me, but one thing I do buy into is "you can't keep it unless you give it away". For me I do so much better when I'm doing good for someone else. Nothing feels better than having a little 18-19 year old open up to you and you be able to help that person you see going down the same roads you've traveled. Cant put a dollar amount on the value of helping one person not go through the pain I went through

You're still an addict except its "legal drugs"

This is why I think I need to go back to AA. Just to help someone else. I feel a bit selfish in not sharing my story with newcomers.

Its hard to disagree if it works for you.

Honestly, the trick for me was going to AA. I really had to get over the hurdle of the 3rd step. Once I gave up self reliance and found a higher power I found peace.

I really think the trick to sobriety is faith in something, peace/contentment and honesty.

<<< coming up on 8 years here.

One thing I like to ask people now is when they start throwing out cliches - be it a quoted section of the Big Book, a saying, a principle, whatever...I do them like my sponsor does me.

I say, "that's great but what does that mean to you - how do you define that in your own words with your own experience?"

It really makes a person think beyond a memorized passage of words.

you haven't recovered from shit, you just replaced illegal drugs for legal ones. all you did was change the method by which you supply and feed your addictions

Trolling Kate Upton threads and now an actual heartfelt thread on recovering from addiction. Is there anything you don't troll?

And how does that hurt anyone, myself included? There is such a think as better living thru pharmaceuticals for some people.
