I was talking to my roommate about Tesla last night, and he raised an interesting point.

If Tesla becomes a huge success, and redefines the automobile industry, do you think it would have a large enough impact on the oil and gas industry to put a signifant number of Americans out of jobs?

If so it would be years down the line. Who's to say other things don't happen that would too.

Could be good or bad.

0.00% chance

Tesla didn't find an alternate source of energy, they just make expensive electric cars

If by gas you mean natural.. it still takes that to charge his cars.

Good for Tesla. Let the market figure all this out without archaic dealer laws in the way.

Possibly in the long term, but absolutely not in our lifetimes imo. O&G is used in a LOT more than powering our cars.

Hmm....so I was wrong in assuming the because these cars are electric that they don't use gas?

How much per charge? Where can I read more about this?

Fairy dust and Unicorn piss, just like everything else. When you plug your car in the wall, the energy magically appears.

The cars themselves don't use any fossil fuels, but the electricity used to charge its batteries comes from fossil fuel.

OOOO yea, I guess the burning of the fossil fuels too create the electricity used to charge the batteries would probably lessen the effect on the oil and gas industry

Not to mention, you don't honestly believe the oil companies arent investing billions of dollars a year in alternative energy research? You think Exxon is just going to wake up tomorrow and go "Welp, were out of oil. Its been a good run, world."

I've see the study posted on here where it actually costs more fossil fuels to manufacture an electric car than a gasoline car.

WSJ Article.

quote:

A 2012 comprehensive life-cycle analysis in Journal of Industrial Ecology shows that almost half the lifetime carbon-dioxide emissions from an electric car come from the energy used to produce the car, especially the battery. The mining of lithium, for instance, is a less than green activity. By contrast, the manufacture of a gas-powered car accounts for 17% of its lifetime carbon-dioxide emissions. When an electric car rolls off the production line, it has already been responsible for 30,000 pounds of carbon-dioxide emission. The amount for making a conventional car: 14,000 pounds
