Maybe not disappear completely from the English language. But I think it would have less impact and I think there wouldn't be unnecessary overreactions to someone saying it in private 20 years ago.

Maher was fired by ABC. He got another job with HBO.

Maybe Deen will get another job too after this dies down. BET maybe?

If the backlash isn't that bad then why pull the ads.

I'm just confused how a white guy who is probably a bigger celebrity than Paula Dean can say horrible racial slurs just months ago without any backlash. But yet Paula Dean receives all sorts of media backlash for racial slurs she said many years ago. It just doesn't make sense. Why is one different than the other? Hmmmmmm....

Yes

I have not heard a white person say the n-word in many years = even in the context of a joke.

I hear it all the time at school amongst black students in normal conversation.

I hear it from white people all the time. Hell even I say it every now and again. I just don't care or say it as derogatory to someone black.

ETA: i'm not racist I don't care about skin color at all. I find pretty much all racial sterotypes pretty funny.

crazy arse cracker,

I am just not offended at all by this...

When I hear a black person say this, I just kind of think to myself, is that suppose to be hurtful?

Meanwhile Travon Martin said this in reference to Zimmerman....

Can we say that Travon was a racist? If he were alive today, would he be crucified for his statements?

Not in the least

But Zimmerman, well, he referenced black men every time he called 911

Unfortunately, black men were breaking into these homes...this is well documented in police reports..

over 50 calls were made in a span of 12 months

I'm thinking a little profiling was impossible to not do

None of my white acquaintances these days are of the type who use this kind of language.

say it as derogatory to someone black.

I think that is all that is important. The power of a word is in its intent, not in its usage.

No word should be endowed with such a power. It is akin to the religious prohibition over saying "jahway" (or whatever it was in early jewish history) or the depiction of Mohammed in a cartoon.

We are worshiping a f'n WORD for god's sake.

Look at what was SAID and then make up your mind on whether it was insulting or not.

jeebus we are screwed as a nation when this crap gets media wall-to-wall coverage.

Media and the tax system are this countries two biggest problems at the moment.

We need a fair tax and an unbiased media. We'll never see either of those again in america most likely.

I'm pretty sure the N word isn't even a word anymore.

Do you know where the word 'cracker' comes from?

The difference between the N word and cracker is the direction the whip was going.

Cracker cracked the whip.

"No word should be endowed with such a power"

I know right! It's just a word. Just like any other word. The word Marriage for example....

Yes - do you? Cracker came from Florida were whips were used in the herding of cattle.

This is your imagination at work.

No, that's where black people started using it about white people.

Queer didn't always mean gay, the origin of the word wasn't "homosexuals". But that's what it has transformed into.

Is that my imagination at work too?

I see what you did there =

I just don't like the redefinition of the word and the denigration of the institution it represents.

But I have exhausted my willingness to expound on this topic. If anyone has any direct challenges I will - or may - address them. I won't keep re-iterating them.

My parents and them live close and work together. As someone who knows her and the family very well, I've never ever ONCE heard that woman say anything bad about someone. She's a kind generous lady who is getting some of the most hateful and overreacted backlash to a huge misunderstanding. The media has done a fine job (as usual) of combining what her brother and his restaurant is getting sued for, and what she admitted under oath. Lisa Jackson (a white woman mind you) is suing bubba, paula, and the restaurant for racial slurs and sexual harassment. Paula only helped fund the establishment, she didn't run it. It's a shame that her sponsors are dropping her like this because its happening to the most genuine person on the planet. To a fellow ranter and and TD user, give her the benefit of the doubt.

PS her accent is 100% real.

re: If Paula Deen is out, what about Maher and Sharpton?

I'd be interested in your basis for that.

I do not think that whites using whips on blacks was a common occurrence - enlighten me if I am wrong.

That it occurred is irrefutable, but was in prevalent enough for it to become a common pejorative for white masters. I think that came about as a recent interpretation of what went on during the slave era.

So, it may well be in reference to some made up revisionist history of what 'cracker' meant, but I don't think it has basis in actual fact. It is a modern affectation, picked up for the reason that it can re-ignite the slave era emotions.

White people from Florida were called crackers by other whites - pejorative in the sense that they were uneducated - old time version of 'redneck.'

I have not researched this - it is based on what I have read over the years.

If you can substantiate that 'cracker' was used by the slaves of the slave era to talk about white people in general, then please enlighten me.

I want to know.
