What about Wimbledon last year? Or FO in 2008? Or AO in 2010 and 2011? Was he more or less injured today than those other losses which were also blamed on injury?

You mean French Open 2009? I think that was a combination of not being mentally in the game (because of his parents divorce) and just running into a guy (Soderling) who played the match of his life.

He took seven months off after Wimby last year so clearly there was something wrong.

Aussie 2010 he retired in a match against Murray. I actually don't remember that match, but he retired so clearly he was hurt.

Aussie 2011 was where he lost to Ferrer. He hurt himself early in the match and should have retired. He couldn't even run and was just limping around the court. I have no idea why he didn't retire.

How much longer is Rafa going to be able to play if he takes roughly 9 months off and can still barely make it through the clay court season?

He has tendinitis, so it's always just a matter of time before the tendons get inflamed and the knee says "no mas".

I think he needs to do a better job of managing his playing schedule. Basically do like Serena does.

Nadal is obviously the big news of the day. But there were other matches on as well.

SPOILERS galore, obviously:

I was bummed to see Auburn resident Jamie Hampton get bounced in the first round, but at least it was to another American (Sloane Stevens which is a damn tough first round match). Melanie Oudin put up a good fight but also lost.

Lleyton Hewitt w/ a straight set win over Wawrinka.

FO 2009, you are correct.

And I am not claiming he wasn't injured in any of those matches. I just found austingator's assertion that "He was clearly hurt. I've watched him for years, and I've never seen him move like that" to be funny because in a number of his other slam losses, injuries have been asserted as the primary cause. So was this really the worst?

If he's hurt, then fine. It happens. I just get tired of certain of his fans claiming that he is essentially 164-0 in slams when healthy and 0-22 when injured. Sometimes, the guy just gets outplayed. That's what I saw today.

There's no doubt that he just gets outplayed sometimes. I think today, last year's wimby, and FO 2009 are examples of that.

But there's also no question that his inability to stay healthy is a major plotline in the story of Nadal's career. For example, the 2009 season to me, as a Nadal fan, is such a goddamn shame. There is simply no denying that he was the best player in the world in 2009 on all surfaces, and then he basically just sits the year out. It does make you wonder what could have been.

I lost money on that.

ETA: but ended up even on the day. Tipsarevic has turned to shit, and so I jumped on Troicki +185

Injuries suck. I'm not a big Nadal fan, but I appreciate what he can do on the court, and that he is generally classy off the court as well. It is never good to see injuries take down greatness.

Maybe it strikes a nerve w/ me b/c my favorite athlete ever is Bo Jackson and I always wonder what else he could have done if he had not gotten hurt.

That being said, injuries are what they are and they definitely go into the equation when you assess someone's career.

I never thought he'd regain his form after last year. The start of this year had renewed my hope, but I believe it was false hope. I see 1-2 more FOs and that's it.

I hope I'm wrong .

Yes, I think he is probably too. Hell, he might have been thinking he wasn't losing that many points (didn't have much to defend), and he preferred not to go through a 5th set affair, and maybe save some of himself for the hard court season. Playing on hard courts is safer than trying not to slip on new grass.

Rafa's strategy was to get through the slick grass with defense, against a weaker opponent. He does this at Wimbledon first week. Usually it works. Last year and this year these guys were playing out of their minds. But something happened during the match, because Rafa was clearly not even trying to win the points like he usually does.

Wimbledon courts look gorgeous, but are dangerous early in the tournament. Ask Azarenka who almost blew her ACL today

Aussie 2010 was the time he had an abdominal muscle injury. He could not serve. (if I remember correctly).

Rafa is a big boy. He was signing autographs after the match, and being a class act during his post match interview. I think he has a better perspective on his tennis career than his fans, and his haters. It was not in his best interest to fight on today.

Hopefully he can have a few more years carefully selecting his tournaments. He has won Wimbledon twice already.

I think that is the case with a lot of athletes. Maybe the athletes have some perspective on how blessed they are.

I find Nadal's little ticks kind of annoying, but he has always been a class act.

I believe the torn abdominal was USO 2009. It was whatever year Delpo just absolutely beat the frick out of him. Yeah, definitely USO 2009, because Delpo went on to win it that year.

I had no doubt Querrey would lost to Tomic. I even bet on it.

However, I also bet on Kohlschreiber, and for -- literally -- the fourth consecutive time, Kohlschreiber has proceeded to frick me right in the ass.

#nohomo

I will not be betting on Kohlschreiber anymore. Fool me four times...

If Berdych loses to Klizan, I'm fuuhuuucked.

But surely he won't. He got bounced early at the FO. He's too good to get bounced out early at two consecutive GS's.

I'm also rooting for Simon.

I forgot to put in my Kei play. Doh!
