re: Pelicans meeting with McLemore and Oladipo

Charlotte could take Oladipo or Bennett, Same for Phoenix. Although I just read that the suns GM would be ecstatic if McLemore fell to 5 , but take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

I don't see that comparison at all. Not close.

I don't think Paul George was anywhere near the scorer coming out of college.

I see McLemore's game as way more like Ray Allen (with more athleticism). That's not to say he'll be Ray Allen, just a similar player

This is how I could see it playing out for Mclemore to fall to us

Cavs - Len
Magic - Burke
Bullets - Porter
Bobcats - Noel
Suns - Oladipo

Unless McLemore just was disastrous in his workout with Phoenix, I just can't see them passing on him.

Time to revisit the Gordon to Suns trade. It cannot be official until mid-July, but Pels should be all-in if McClemore falls to #5. Then they have options at #6 depending on who is left.

I think the Suns would have no interest. I think they realize they dodged a massive bullet and would be content with Oladipo or McLemore.

You'd think so, but they are not so patient. They wanted a Dragic-Gordon backcourt and are desperate to be a playoff team. They also took on Beasley. If they believe Gordon is healthy, I would not be surprised at all if they bite again.

Orlando has locked into Trey Burke according to a league source

I said this a couple of days ago. With the BOS/LAC deal falling through, the proposed Beldsoe/Affalo deal won't happen. If the keep Affalo, they have some pretty good talent at the 2-5, with a gaping hole at the PG spot. I'm sure they'd like to fall back a few spots to get Burke, but if they can't, I think he's still their guy at 2.

Thats what the reports said for his workouts with Suns and Magic.

quote:

Sources tell ESPN that Kansas SG Ben McLemore was out of shape in recent workouts for the Suns and Magic. McLemore reportedly "struggled to keep up." It's not a good look for a player whose assertiveness and motivation was already being questioned thanks to a bunch of passive games in college.

I don't think Paul George was anywhere near the scorer coming out of college.

Looking back on George's old reports it sound just like Mclemore's. Late bloomers that have good size and athleticism for their positions. Both had a rare combination of being great shooters and athletes coming into the league.
Both are very unselfish players(at times a little too unselfish in Mclemore's case), and they both struggled creating by beating their man off the bounce.

Paul George draft express:
quote:

Most glaring are his limitations as a shot-creator. He has average stationary ball handling skills and is capable of dribbling the ball on the perimeter at the WAC level, but when it comes to exploding by his man and getting into the teeth of the defense – he presently lacks that skill set. He plays a bit too upright and must learn how to play lower to the ground, which should enhance his ability to utilize his athleticism. Tightening up his ball-handling skills and improving his ability to create in the half-court will be a key part of his development moving forward.

Another reason is his love for the 3 point shot. George attempts 5.8 3-pointers a game, 6th in our database amongst all small forwards. At least one or two a night is of the settling nature – either an attempt early in the shot clock or a quick look in transition with no teammates in position to rebound. As his attempts per game have increased from 4.1 to 5.8, his percentage has dipped from an absurd 44.7% last season to 35.8% this season—a pretty dramatic drop-off.

George is not a very good off the dribble shooter at this point in time, but you would never guess that by the way he plays at times. He’s made just 5/28 attempts (a dismal 18%) of that nature in the 14 game-tapes we have at our disposal—showing how far off he is in this area. His talent level as a shot-maker should allow him to improve here down the road, but he should definitely try to avoid falling in love with his mid-range pull-up.

With that said, his shot is still one of his major selling points. He has an effortless stroke and unlimited range and in today’s NBA, teams are always looking for players who can help spread the floor. He doesn’t elevate particularly well on his shot, but with his excellent size, long wingspan and quick release, he doesn’t have a problem getting it off.

Another strong aspect of his game is in his ability to see the floor and his willingness to share the ball. With good size on the perimeter he can see over the defense and make difficult passes in the half court, averaging slightly over 3 assists a game which makes him one of the better passing small forwards in college basketball.

Mclemore's strengths according to DX video:
Athleticism
Shooting Ability
Defensive Potential
Passing Instincts

What do the Suns have that we would want?

Assets I'm seeing-

1. Jared Dudley
2. 2013 5th pick
3. 2013 30th pick
4. 2014 1st from Minnesota - Top 13 protected
5. 2015 1st from Lakers - Top 5 protected

Given Gordon's salary and Phoenix' payroll, which will require them to send out at least one contract, I'm thinking Gordon for 2013 #5 and Shannon Brown ($3.5m, expiring).

I'd rather Dudley, but I think that Phoenix would consider #5 and Dudley too much for Gordon.

That's the real concern with McLemore. He could be a bigger character risk than Gordon. It is a VERY bad sign if it's true he has been lazy and out-of-shape at this time when he should trying to impress teams.

I mean he had "actually" disastrous workouts, not "smokescreen" disastrously bad workouts. We will see I guess.

The team interviewed McLemore at the combine. What's the point of this? Surely they'd take him if he's there. The whispers of McLemore's fall might be more than a smoke screen from other teams if Demps wants a 2nd look. Also, his agent agreeing to the meeting points to the whispers being semi legit.

Trading Gordon and relying on McLemore as a starter will set this organization back another 2 years.

I wouldn't mind having him but you don't trade Gordon as a result. It's hard a frick for a first year SG to succeed right away, especially with the concerns McLemore has. A guy like Beal struggled despite having a "good year" by rookie standards.

it's a tough situation to be in.

you want to find the minutes for Mac if you draft him, but at what cost? Playing Gordon more at the 1? Going small and playing Greivis, Mac and Gordon at the same time?

Would y'all rather have Mclemore or trade the pick to someone who is willing to give up a nice amount for him. Say first this year and next and possibly a decent vet. Any chance of this?
