Huey's Bar opening in downtown Baton Rouge next month

quote:

New bar, Huey's, opening in downtown Baton Rouge next month

quote:

The historical bent begins with the name: Huey’s Bar, a reference that needs no explanation in the Capital City.

quote:

“It brings back the 1920s, 1930s era after Prohibition when cocktails came back in full swing, and it was all handmade, southern-style cocktails,” said one of the new bar’s partners, Andrew Bayard, who comes from Happy’s Irish Pub down the street.

quote:

Huey’s will be non-smoking and cater heavily to the happy-hour, after-work crowd, serving Louisiana cocktails like sazeracs as well as martinis. Some Louisiana craft brews will also be on tap,

quote:

The partners said they want the bar to appeal to women more than some of downtown’s other bars do.

Isn't the Kingfish lounge in the downtown Hilton also using that theme?

Hell, if there's gonna be women there sign me up. I'll be there with my e-cig and wingmen.

They'll have gin fizz, so I'm in.

Olive or Twist is PACKED with women Thursday -Saturday. With that in mind, I'd say speciality cocktails do well with women, and I think Huey's will actually have luck with its business model.

Gah, I think more than a few people need to study LA history at something more than the 8th grade level. Long was a tyrant--I wouldn't go drinking in a bar named after him.

Just one example of his overreaching: Long expelled students from LSU for publishing anti-Long sentiments in the campus paper (the famous Reveille Seven). One of the Reveille Seven had a girlfriend in law school, and Long drummed her out of LSU law. Marian Mayer Berkett later graduated from Tulane Law & became the first woman ever hired by a LA law firm. She's still alive and kicking, and if you ever hear her talk about life in Baton Rouge when Long was at the height of his power, you won't feel so warm and fuzzy about his legacy. Read about her here: LINK

Huey had his faults. Lots of them. All politicians do. He did also build up infrastructure in Louisiana allowing for industry to more readily move into the state and made transportation easier. He pioneered providing free books to students in primary and secondary school. He lead the opening of LSU's med school in Nola.

And most importantly, He got funding to build Tiger Stadium.

He wasn't free of sin, but who really is? Especially in politics.

Really? Maybe if it was Hitler's ... not supporting a local establishment because it was named after a politician that wasn't perfect 80 years ago is terribly weak.

I think you got me all wrong. I'm looking forward to going hang out at Huey's. I was trying to say that Huey, even with his faults, left a lasting impression on this state that I would venture to say is positive and was in the process of leading us to success until Edwards got too greedy.

This is really a discussion for the Poli board. I'm just looking forward to specialty cocktails.

I hear ya ..... i am sensitive as a local bar owner as well and wouldn't want anyone to not frequent a place because of the name.

He declared martial law in Baton Rouge; it was illegal for more than two people to congregate. This was justified under the idea that a "murder plot" was afoot. His legacy has received a thorough whitewashing in this state, hence my suggestion that folks need to embrace a more nuanced understanding of his legacy beyond schoolbooks and paved roads.

And can we talk about his descendants still managing to suck of LA's teats? Do a little research on the Win or Lose Corporation: LINK

Okay okay. You're right. I get it. I'm still going to go grab drinks at that bar despite it being named after Huey. It's an iconic thing.

Thanks for the info, by the way. I'm going to look further into his years in office.

Oh, and I'm still thankful for Tiger Stadium. I can't let that one go

Do you refuse to cross the bridges named after him? Drive Airline highway? Thumb your nose at the State Capitol? Become ill when you see tiger stadium in TV?

I've crossed his namesake bridge daily for more years than most TD posters have been on the internet. Of course I thumb my nose at the State Capitol, but for an entirely different set of reasons. The commercial/recreational appropriation of his name is what bugs me. Hell, I wouldn't go drinking at an EWE-themed joint either.

How about a little originality? It's safe to say I'm no fan of "theme" restos and bars.
