Cuban nervous about clearing cap space for nothing 2 years in a row.

That would be awesome if a repeat of last year happened to them again this year.

Which is part of why I want to go ahead and do this. We can get what we want and Cuban will likely be stuck holding his dick.

He can still make a play for Howard but, if you're Howard, would you want to go play alongside a declining Dirk when you're going to be fighting the Clip Show, Heat, Knicks, etc., for good players willing to ring-chase?

I don't think Dell and Monty care that much about this draft class to grab a 13th pick with the 6th and why should they? Unless they really like someone late. Or if they want to flip the pick and package it to move up if Len drops to 4...

I don't think they're particularly enamored with the draft class either, but the possibility of filling a major roster hole for one season and getting a long-term prospect at that same position is intriguing.

Marion plus Shabazz at 13 means we have plugged most of the major holes on our roster. Our last remaining hole would be a backup 2, if Monty and Dell are still sure that Rivers will be a point rather than a 2.

To increase assets. Even if this is the worst draft in the last 10 years I guarantee you there will be at least 2 quasi all star players picked between 10 and 25. The rest may all be busts, but if you have the proper scouting and development, you can most definitely find a gem at 13. The question is what's better long term?

1) A fading star like Iggy
2) A potentially rising star you may have to throw the max at like Pekovic or Jennings
3) Use cap space and small assets for a mix of mid level guys like Gortat/Chandler
4) Use cap space to get a stop gap veteran and the #13

I don't think Marion and #13 would be Demps' first choice, but we don't know how realistic he thinks options 1-3 are. I think Option 1 is a bad idea because Iggy's only coming here for a 4 year deal and that contract length just does not line up well with Davis getting his 2nd contract. I think Option 2 is bad because neither are worth a max to the Pelicans and I honestly don't think Pekovic is as attainable as most do. I kind of like Option 3 depending on what kind of assets we have to give up to make it happen. But if the price of Option 3 is too high then Option 4 doesn't look too bad. You pick up an asset and get to try this all over again next year.

Exactly. I think of Dallas at the 5th most likely place Howard will go (in no order, LAL, LAC, Houston, Atlanta, then Dallas).

Besides Anthony Davis being the consensus number 1 pick last year, and this year not having one, I think this year is strong than last year, especially at the 10-15 range.

I know you weren't saying it was the worst in 10 year right here, but a lot of people have been labeling this draft as being really weak.

People overrate the shite out of draft picks. The vast majority of players picked in this year's draft (or any draft, for that matter), will be busts.

Shit, Aminu and Xavier were picked at 8 and 12 in a better draft than this one (imo, at least) and they both are busts (Aminu obviously less so).

That being said, its not like this FA class is some juggernaught of awesome-ness, and our options might be limited.

We don't need a star, IMHO, we need talent in general.

Having multiple picks raises the chances that we may get someone who works out for us.

I agree with that. The talent on this team is just severely limited. The more talent, the better.

Taking on Marion for a year and taking a shot next year as our talent develops MIGHT be the best option. After this current season, we should be much more primed to make a legit playoff push and we'll have some money to spend, assets to trade and another (hopefully lower 11-14) lottery pick.

A combination of Burke/Shabazz or Len/MCW (or similar moves) would be a pretty great haul.

Heck, I would love to buy another pick, draft Giannis Adetokoubo and stash him overseas for 2 years. Its not my money.

However, it looks like we might be chatting about this for nothing, as a lot of other teams are in play for this and we don't seem to be mentioned.

One thing we hadn't considered: does OKC really want their lottery pick and their own pick? Will they consider moving it/them with young players to make a splash?

I'd think that OKC moves the picks with Perkins for a center that is less of a liability.

Perkins has such negative value. The smart move would be to Amnesty Perkins, then use the two picks and Lamb/Jones to a team will send them good talent that they want to get rid of.

Like say, an Eric Gordon and Robin Lopez.

(I'm not saying we would do it, or that it can even be done financially (it can't), but just something like that.)

burke, mccollum, mcw
mcclemore, oladipo
shabazz, porter
bennett, zeller
len, noel

i think you can pick any combination of players and they would benefit this team or demps in his ability to package together a deal...marion as stated would be a huge upgrade even on a temp basis at the 3 position. as far as moving pieces we would have several options then. GV, AR, Darius Miller, our top 2 picks this year, Marion, Ryno, we could actually make some decent moves...or sit on our roster and wait till marion jumps off pay roll and try to make some moves next FA...in the meantime you continue to develop the talent we do have and let our players grow. EG will either get healthy or even he can be moved down the road for future cap space or return as well...unlike bower days we have a team littered with options if we choose to use them. again i dont want to get too excited about this but i think based off what im seeing right now in FA i would rather build through the draft.

Heard a good point on the BBS podcast: Demps and Monty haven't gotten the likes of Shabazz, McCollum, Zeller, Nogueira in for workouts, so the Pelicans probably aren't interested in the 13th pick or trading down.

Do we know for sure that they didn't try to get them in though? There's been a lot of talk about players not wanting to work out for teams lately.

Unless they have a guarantee from a team in front of us or would really hate playing for NOLA vs a team like Portland or Philly, I don't see why they wouldn't come in.

You never know.

The Spurs picked Kawhi after only interviewing him at the combine and thinking there was no way to get him.

I dont see how draft picks are overrated. You could just as easily land a talented player anywhere in the draft. You dont know until you pick them, and considering how cheap they are, you really arent hurting anything to see if they pan out.

Also, sources tell SheridanHoops.com the Cavs are in serious discussions to acquire Shawn Marion from Dallas in a lopsided trade that would allow them to move up from No. 19 to No. 13 in the first round by relieving the Mavs of Marion’s $9.3 million salary, allowing Mark Cuban more salary cap flexibility to use on July 1.
