House approves amendment to Farm bill to test food stamp recipients for drugs

quote:

Democrats were outraged at the proposal, and said that by proposing it, Republicans are implying that people on food stamps use drugs

quote:

"It costs a lot of public money just to humiliate people," she said. "It'll cost $75 for one of these drug tests, and for what purpose? Just to criminalize and humiliate poor people."

"This is about demeaning poor people," Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) added. "And we've been doing this time and time again on this House floor."

quote:

By voice vote, members approved the idea as an amendment to the farm bill that was proposed by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.). Hudson said the proposal would help ensure SNAP benefits go to needy families and children.

I meant the drug testing. People aren't poor because they are on drugs, also it isn't like it's difficult to beat a 75 dollar drug test.

No shit, Sherlock. I'm guaranteeing it, that roughly 30% on food stamps use drugs.

quote:

It'll cost $75 for one of these drug tests

And, IMO the recipients must pay for the drug screen. If found clean, then they get their money back.

quote:

"This is about demeaning poor people,"

This fricking idiot. It's about cutting back on fraud in the system, and actually helping out the people that need help. Not the pot smokers sitting on the porch collecting their gubment check.

I disagree. I think a lot of these folks are doing drugs and they shouldn't receive stamps if they can afford drugs.

Catch a person failing a drug test and they lose stamps for a year. They can re-apply and get tested again. That'll have a positive net for the state.

You don't have to do drug tests on every individual every month.

Not the point

Agree

quote:

This is about demeaning poor people

Ridiculous

If we spent the money allocated for drug screens on stopping welfare abuse, we would get more bang for our buck.

Well if you don't use illegal drugs, then you probably have nothing to worry about. The "outrage" comes from the fact that they know damn good and well many welfare recipients (not all) are drug users. The money they're using to buy the drugs could just as easily be used to buy a loaf of bread and pack of ham. Personally, I don't give a shite if someone wants to use drugs, but when you're asking me to help foot the bill for their meals, now I've got a vested interest.

I hear the same whining when photo ID at the voting booth is proposed--"the poor can't afford to get photo ID's".

Yet in order to get on a Section 8 housing waiting list, guess what you have to have? That's right--a photo ID.

Taken from the Denton (TX) Housing Authority website (I have one Section 8 tenant):

"Applicants must provide Social Security cards for all persons in the household age 6 and over (if they have one), and picture I.D. for all adult family members."

If they can afford the illegal drugs, they probably don't need food stamps at the expense of taxpayers. No one is saying that they can't eat- they just need to pay for their meals on their own.

Hard to find a job and improve yourself when you can't pass a drug test.....though I guess some people view these safety net programs as a permanent fix for many people as opposed to temporary assistance.

I see no problem with testing. People paying the taxes that fund these programs are subject to employer screenings- as are the government employees that administer them.

Who says they bought the drugs? What if they went to a friends house last week who happened to be smoking pot. They take a couple of hits because lets face it they're on food stamps their life probably isn't that great. Now they shouldn't be able to eat?

quote:

Catch a person failing a drug test and they lose stamps for a year. They can re-apply and get tested again. That'll have a positive net for the state

If this happens I forsee crime skyrocketing. I doubt these people will decide to just not eat or get a job all the sudden.

Also as most people who smoke pot and take drug tests know (I know tons of people who do) it is easy to beat the test if you go spend 20-30 bucks at a headshop or online to buy some cleanse stuff.

same as the NSA surveillance right?

less than you think. Drugs aren't the reason people are poor.

The only group to actually implement this was Florida in a VERY small sample population.

They found approx. 2% were on drugs...and they lost money on it.

There were alot of issues involved such as corruption (OMG NO WAYZ RIGHT?) on how the drug testing administrators were chosen and the cost per test etc.

That being said, I think you can learn from Florida's mistakes, improve the process and have something that is beneficial.

THAT being said...there is NO WAY our gov't can implement this and not have it be a huge colossal waste of time and money.

Whatch what you say there. You could use this exact argument to defend NSA.

Difference being that these people receive money from the government.

Employers pay for the test for potential new hires. Make sure they're not throwing their money away.

Anyone who says this is ignorant.

When you TRULY examine what happened in Florida you will see how flawed it was from the beginning...

AND, it only cost Florida 45K...they tested 4.5K people...think of the FIXED costs associated with running a gov't program included in that 45K which would be brought down when the gains are spread over more than just a FEW THOUSAND PEOPLE.

Again, my opinion on this is that our Gov't can frick up anything.
