This could be a game changer for the industry.

If executed properly, then I might be buying a Tesla as my next car. I love the idea of all electricity cost being baked into the upfront cost of the car.

Why? Buy the energy when you need it.

Sure, you can buy the energy up front but then you are in the energy trading game.

No hassle. I would like not seeing $60 gas bills.

What's the importance of a battery swap? Can users maintain more than one battery at a time?

I know Tesla makes electric cars (and Fisker makes Volt-like plug in hybrid) and is one of Elon Musk's companies but other than that I'm not familiar with either the corporate structure or the products.

How do you purchase the electricity ahead of time? Are you talking about the use of their charging network?

I really like the Model S. Very sleek looking vehicle, and with a 208 mile range, it's very practical for an electric car. I'm not surprised it has been matching Volt and Leaf sales this year. It looks like it should cost twice what they charge for it.

On the other hand, the lack of charging stations along interstate highways would have me going for something like a Volt instead with a gasoline engine to use as backup.

Instead of waiting 30 minutes at a charging station, you may only have to wait a few minutes while your discharged battery gets swapped with a charged one and be on your way.

You pay a little bit extra for the "supercharging" option and you can use Tesla's supercharger network free of charge for life.

There were some rumors floating around that Tesla may "unlock" the supercharging option on all of their vehicles through a software update down the road. Who know's if there's any truth to that though

Depending on a few factors, it has the potential to remove the biggest knock against electric cars (range and charge times).

That's awesome....like a propane tank swap for my grill. How hard is it to swap?

Didn't think of it that way. How does Tesla intend to set up the electric car charging and swap station infrastructure? Existing fueling stations? Super centers?

Wonder if they can make this work for other cars too....like the Volt or the Leaf. Interchangeable batteries in the future maybe? I bet they could partner with GM or Toyota and gain that interchangeability and economies of scale in the future.

I wonder how much labor is involved in a swap.

I think that may put tesla out of business if they have a universal battery replacement between the majors. Does tesla really produce a better car or are they just a first mover in a niche market?

IMHO it's at least partially because Elon Musk is cool and hip.

According to Musk at a shareholders meeting a few weeks ago, he claims that they were going to announce a way to "recharge" the Model S's power supply faster than the average gas station fill up. I guess we'll see at the demo.

Tesla makes better cars. Consumer reports gave the Model S a 99. The battery strength was the only reason for it not getting a 100. Only one other car has ever received a 99 (a Lexus, I think).

If he can solve the 1) Charge time and 2) network of charging stations nationally, then Tesla is primed to be the luxury electric automaker of the future. In 3-4 years, they plan on releasing a smaller version of the Model S that will cost in the 30-40k range which opens up the market tremendously. The Model X is a SUV releasing in the next year or so with Falcon doors and all of the top of the line features.

I am starting to become a believer and Thursday could do a lot to shake up the industry and make electric viable.

I thought Musk was kind of foolish at first, and didn't have much faith in Tesla....looks like they have a better shot at success than Fisker now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Fisker already dead in the water as of now?

Musk is going to have quite the battle about the dealer network. He got quite emotional about it during the last shareholder meeting. He even mentioned how much of a failure the dealer network has been for Fisker.

Tesla cuts out all of the BS of the car buying experience. I was also on the boat thinking this company had no chance and now they have upped the innovation and streamlined the buying process. If they get the battery issues fixed (charging time and availability of supercharging stations) then Musk has a winner.

Wow.... are right about Fisker being belly up.

Fisker is on the verge of bankruptcy....unfortunately the Feds loaned them our tax dollars.

The fisker was just a terrible concept from a business money making standpoint.

An all electric sub-compact 4 door billed as a sports-sedan (that was not particularly fast) that started at 102K for the base model. It's range was also only about 230 miles with a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to pick a Model S over an M5/E63 or an S class/7 series. I can't think of any practical reasons to pick a Karma over those cars.

That and the Karma was absolutely fugly.

400 miles between charges and a battery swap with a car in the right price slot and they are golden.

Maybe even 300 miles between swaps.

A typical day for a suburbanite is a commute plus running kids all over the place.

Then every once in a while, a trip to the beach.

If you can do that daily stuff without stopping, then charge overnight PLUS when you take a long trip, swap a battery like you used to stop for gas, they have a winner.

Agreed, and I will be surprised if we aren't at that level tech-wise within 3-5 years.
