You really want Ed Earls Repair Shop and Internet Cafe working on your $80,000 car?

Maybe dumb reasoning and I could be way off base, but I'd imagine almost all of the power plants in WV are coal fired. I guess they figure that they can spur the coal industry by people recharging cars instead of driving crude based transportation

Could be part of the thinking. The thing is, with the way the grid works, the coal industry will always be relevant.

Coal generation plants are usually the base load generation and have to run 24 hours a day for power distribution to be economically sensible.

By looking and asking, I have found repair shops that offer higher quality repairs than dealers and paid by manufacturer's warranty.

Do your homework and you will find them.

Just out of curiosity, won't this already be nixed due to the "Internet Tax Bill"

Wouldn't that make up for the lost sales tax at the local level?

yes

and if that somehow didn't work, when you registered your car at the DMV they could collect the tax there when you registered it in your state

I think it is PURELY a dealer protection racket.

yup

they are just masking it as a tax issue, but it's crony capitalism

You know good and well that everyone posting in this thread is going to research how to minimize their tax burden on out of state purchases, if these laws pass

It will have a negative effect

So the manufacturer provides training and certification to local repair shops for their brand.

Solved.

Good luck with that. Easier said than done. I have done mechanic work, still do a little on the side every now & then.

Good mechanics are hard to find, and the technology is constantly changing. Training is a constant issue. The 'shade tree' mechanic has long been a thing of the past.
Plus, there is the constant of buying tools, computer software and upgrading of facilities.
The manufactures love to cut hours paid for warranty work. Believe me, this will disincentivize shops wanting to deal with the manufactures.

Go to any sizeable dealership, thier parking lots are full and many of them have backlogs for weeks.
A mechanic shop is very capital intensive, and labor intensive. A good technician can make $100K a year.

Then you have the logistics of replacement parts. So are the manufactures going to ship in replacement parts from a central location? Or from distrubtion centers?

You still are going to run into a lot of the challenges of a local dealership.

Easier said than done.

I guess my luck has been good.

The 3rd party shops I've used get training. They send people to Mercedes and BMW in Germany to learn the latest stuff.

Tesla has a service center in Denver, they come to you if there is an issue with your car and you cannot bring it in.

There will not be a single state that will lose 20% of its tax base to California. Because once they are allowed to get a foot in the door, cars makers will use the new laws to undercut their dealerships in a heartbeat

So it won't have anything to do with the product and everything to do with government regulation. Great job states!

the local dealer model is obsolete, these laws are anti-consumer and anti-business and need to be abolished.

I totally agree. i do 90% of my shopping (bigger retail items) online, and it saves me money. this is likely the middle mans mark-up....

Funny that this thread was made today... I actually saw two Teslas out and about today.

I've seen them in their showrooms, but never out and about. Def some good looking vehicles.

re: Tesla Motor aint gonna make it. Heres why

Oh, and of course, here's the main reason (from the Tesla web site)
quote:

This example includes a 2.95% annual percentage rate, 15% down payment, and 72-month loan term, excluding fees, sales tax, and registration.

Cash Price $71,070

Rate 2.95%

Down Payment 15%

Term 72 mo

ESTIMATED PAYMENT

The minimum down payment for a 66 through 72-month term loan is 15%. For terms 63-months and lower, the minimum down payment is reduced to 10%.

California $10,000 Colorado $13,500 Illinois $11,500

Georgia $12,500 Utah $8,105 West Virginia $15,000

All Other States $7,500

Your down payment may be offset by electric vehicle incentives.t

That's $916 a month over SIX years

Plus when the incentives go away, the monthly note goes to over $1000 a month

You could own two nice cars over 5 years for that

I think League Champ is one of those guys that just hates electric cars but likes state regs and gov intervention if it defeats innovation he considers "liberal".

You're right. Prices will never go down and tesla will never offer a cheaper car in the future...

I don't know about that but I am beginning to wonder whether or not he owns a dealership.
