Obama wants to end 'war on terror' but Congress balks

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama wants to roll back some of the most controversial aspects of the U.S. "war on terror," but efforts to alter the global fight against Islamist militants will face the usual hurdle at home: staunch opposition from Republicans in Congress.

In a major policy speech on Thursday, Obama narrowed the scope of the targeted-killing drone campaign against al Qaeda and its allies and announced steps toward closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba.

Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss said in an address to constituents on Friday.

Obama called for an end to a "boundless global war on terror" but Republicans warned against being too quick to declare al Qaeda a spent force.

Some Democrats who back closing the camp also say its steep cost - $900,000 per year per inmate compared with $65,000 at a U.S. supermax - might prompt some fiscal conservatives to rethink Guantanamo in a time of budget austerity.

Although its a drop in the bucket for military spending, it is pretty significant... especially since most of the prisoners will be sent to overseas prisons. Don't know why the Republicans aren't behind closing Guantanamo even if it would mean coming up with an idea or two of their own. (do you hear that McCain?)

Good for him if this is true.

Unfortunately I've heard this song and dance from him before. I'll believe it when I see it.

Do you really think that if Obama lets the remaining GTMO terrorists go (which are reported in news articles to be the worst of the worst) and because Obama says 'war on terror' is over.' And we utilize one of Obama's statements, that by working with organizations such as CAIR to advise us. That terrorism just magically goes away?

No. No one believes that and no one is saying that except you.

It is way over due to have Gitmo closed. Obama was supposed to do that after the first election.

I wonder if his scaled back drone campaign will include killing American citizens?

spin away. Don't you want to close Guantanamo or do you just want to keep it open until a Republican can come in and close it?

Pull all of the workers from GITMO out of the country and leave the prisoners there to fend for themselves. The next day order multiple front attacks on the facility and kill everyone that's left. The facility is diminished to rubble, worst of the worst terrorists are dead, and we are out of there. Everyone wins.

Terrorism is dead...

Hooray for Obama

"Mission accomplished"

"4 Americans dead in Benghazi due to video"
"Boston Bombing by two misunderstood youth"
"English Soldier hacked to death by unemployed youth"

"Doing away with war on terror will finally abolish the Islamist hate for the West"

You mean Congress once again will block the closing of Gitmo and has been doing so for years?

Seems like there's been a poster here saying this all along.

I wonder if those other posters blaming Obama will come forward and say they were wrong.

Somehow I think OleMiss will win a NC in any sport before that happens.

I was thinking more in terms of ending the drone strikes.

The Gitmo detainees should get their day before a military tribunal. If we determine them to be innocent, let them go. If we determine them to be guilty, put them away for life and it doesn't matter where we keep them.

We are at war with muslim terrorists like it or not. As such, we should wage total war against them and those who harbor or finance them no matter where we find them. The time for playing nice is over. And the time to inflict enough death and destruction that they no longer see terrorism as worth the cost has arrived.

Obama wants to cut spending on outside terrorists and muslim terrorists and AQ, so that he and Holder can focus on U.S. Citizens more. U.S. Citizens have had more to fear from this administration than foreign terrorists.

Of course he did, he was going to all along. He is already supplying the MB with money and munitions for their global war on the rest of the non-muslim world.
