quote:

I assume the Tesla is registered in Cali
That would make no sense. You register a vehicle based upon where you live.

quote:

Most folks don't rush to get their car registered in a new state
Most states require it in a certain time frame.

quote:

and its value would be greatly reduced since it would be a used car by the time it is registered.
Nope. For example. In VA, if you arrive in state with a car less than 1 year old, you must provide a purchase document showing sales taxes paid. Otherwise, VA charges you taxes as if you'd bought it NEW in VA.

quote:

And some states don't require registration based on value = a ton of lost revenue in this case
Again. EASILY solved via legislation.

Point being. Even if all cars only had to pay taxes in Cali if bought this way, it would take about 10 minutes for a state to pass a law that creates a tax that targets such vehicles.

What state legislatures CANNOT do is save local dealers if they get cut out. Hence, this is OBVIOUSLY about saving dealers who donate heavily to political coffers.

There will not be a single state that will lose 20% of its tax base to California
To title a car in Georgia, you have to pay the tax; it doesn't matter where you bought it.

States have already figured out how to get their money. The issue here is that if sales not through dealers accelerate, dealers will get state legislatures to pass laws to protect them.

Yep. And the whole "lost tax revenue" meme is what dealers are wanting voters to focus on because then, perhaps they can get support for their protection racket. The dealers understand that the typical voter is an idiot economically and wont realize how easily any legislature could find that tax revenue.

change registration laws... abolish anti-consumer, protectionist laws... case closed

And Jindals answer would be, "just open up a dealership in our state."

the GA law was actually passed to protect dealers, as it requires taxes to be paid on private used car sales as well.

Car dealers have a lot of pull.

Thats one thing I tried to find out, but never could... Does that bill cover any transaction or is it only transactions via the internet?

I was thinking the same thing. Could you just call it in over the phone?

I thought you had to pay your sales tax where the car is registered anyway? I bought my car in Texas and paid LA tax.

Do you have to pay the tax based on value or just a flat tax?

I know in some states, its just a flat registration tax on top of the fees. In Tx, I think its $80.

I suppose it's based on the laws in your state.

Like I said, I paid LA sales tax on my car I bought in TX.

Trust me, its not a me me its a fact. That why you have the push for the Internet tax bill.

Also, my neighbor of 7 years, still has Texas plates. So yeah, tons of lost revenue if the laws are changed. People arent gonna rush to pay taxes on their 'out of state' purchase

There is a feature on Tesla in WSJ...I think it was Thursday edition.
Said that they cannot succeed without subsidies. Not only Federal infusions of cash but also state rebates from Green places. Some of the govt incentives take $15K off the price of each car.

it's based on value - not on the actual amount paid.

On the topic of electric/hybrid vehicles....

I got a chance to drive one of the new Ford Hybrids on my recent vacation and I actually enjoyed it. Averaged right at 40mpg and that was going through mountains and the likes.

I would honestly consider purchasing one for my next car.

That's only in West Virginia

There are a handful of places that offer an additional state rebate. West Virginia is the largest.

Shocking actually

Which can be easily overcome via legislation. Especially with an item that MUST be registered. This aint like buying an MP3 player online or something.

quote:

That why you have the push for the Internet tax bill.
That is because you can buy shite on the net that the state would NEVER be aware of. No such luck with cars.

quote:

Also, my neighbor of 7 years, still has Texas plates.
EVERY state has laws on this subject and few people are exempt. So no, not tons of lost revenue and again. Even if the state CURRENTLY allowed you to stay registered that long from other states, it is SIMPLE to change that law. SIMPLE>

You tend to get better mileage at higher elevations. I got 34 MPG on the way to Wyoming. 42 going back home with it all being downhill.

I typically get 28 FWIW

Maybe dumb reasoning and I could be way off base, but I'd imagine almost all of the power plants in WV are coal fired. I guess they figure that they can spur the coal industry by people recharging cars instead of driving crude based transportation

The Big 3 have been trying for years to do away with the local dealership model. The local dealership is almost like thorn in thier sides.

What a lot of people are forgetting is that these vehicles are going to need service work and warranty repairs. Not to mention parts to repair vehicles.

If the the manufactures do succeed in changing franchise laws, there is going to a lot of unintende consequences.

So the manufacturer provides training and certification to local repair shops for their brand.

Solved.
