He got an additional $970,000 signing bonus in each of the 3 remaining years(for a $2.91 total new signing bonus). His base salary this year is now only $840,000(vet minimum; originally $5.25 mil) and his cap hit is $3.66 mil(originally $7.1 mil).

His cap hit next year dropped from $7.9 mil to $5.87 mil. His dead money number is pretty high($3.69 mil) so we'd now only cut him if he completely flamed out or we were desperate for cap space(he'd save only $2.18 mil; cutting Jenkins this year would save $2.51 mil in comparison).

2015 his cap hit actually drops down to $4.47 mil and cutting him would save $3.5 mil(only $970,000 in dead money). This will likely be the year to watch as his cap hit isn't that high but we will likely be extremely strapped for cap. Could go either way.

re: Saints are currently 5.1 mil below the cap

Touching on some things I saw posted.

First, the only draft pick to take up significant cap was vaccaro. I think the 3rd rounders barely broke into the top 51.

Second, the only position I see us making a big trade for is LT. It's possible with Brown injured again, Armstead maybe not being ready yet, and Smith maybe not cutting it. But it's very early and they have to feel awful about their prospects to try and squeeze in a good LT.

Third, Greer definitely becomes a cut candidate more so than Harper now. Harper saves $2.18 mil if cut next year if one site is right (another site has him costing us if we cut him). Greer saves about $3.5.

Fourth, Loomis.

Hoodoo, I put what it means. Those are the numbers and if we need space he could get cut next year (according to one site), but it's more likely to happen in 2015.

I hope it's a JG extension. I think that's more important than a free agent at this point. Not to mention that JG's value is probably at a low since he didn't have a banner year last year.

I'm with you all the way here. Last year wasn't the year a player would want to get a new extension. Sign him now for a few years with the extra money. Chances are, he'll have a great year in 13 and then his costs are gonna skyrocket.

It's not just up to the Saints though. They tried for 2 or 3 years to sign Brees to a new deal but he refused because he knew if he waited for Brady and Manning to do deals he'd one up them and get a monster deal.

Graham knows he had a better 2011 than 2012 and will likely want to play out this year to cash in bigger next year.

bone thug while i agree with you...if its possible to sign him this year to a best TE contract i would do it...if you wait till after the season you will play Brees type ball and be on the hook for an extra million or two per season...I would give him top TE money now and get it over with...had we done this with Brees before 2012 his pay would have been a little over 18 mill a season as oppose to the 20 something average we ended up shelling out for him. I think we can all agree that in any world we live in Jimmy is a top 3 TE and if we are stuck waiting out his contract year we could be in for a monster jimmy year...which maybe management wants...but we will have to pay for it regardless.

it may sound petty but you dont penny pinch waiting to sign your best players...you get those deals done asap...the bulls didnt wait to resign jordan hoping he would have a down season...jimmy is guaranteed to put up 1000 yards and 10 td's with a Bane attacked back, a Sean Payton or Eric Gordon style knee, and a Stallworth hamstring...the guy is a beast and a player that will possibly be the second to fourth Saint from this team to go to Canton. Not including of course the two already there. Brees, Jahri, Nicks, and Jimmy...all 4 either will be or definitely can be HOF'ers.

I'm not saying the Saints should wait. I'm saying Jimmy is likely the one wanting to wait and going the Brees route.

Would he love to get $7-8 mil a year? I'm sure he would, but he would probably like $10 mil a year more and he knows that by waiting he may get that.

There is nobody to wait for. Gronk already got the big TE deal and he's a train wreck

Who else is going to raise the bar? Gates and Gonzo are done, Witten is old. Hernandez could have a big year but that's not a guarantee. If the Saints offer a near Gronk type deal right now ($8mm), Graham will be signing on the dotted line. And if the Saints aren't going after a trade or replacement for Charlie Brown, they should do it. And JG would be a fool to pass that up.

Harper's contract was a brilliant move! His nuts are on the chopping block! CAN'T WAIT!

MOTHERfrickING LOOMIS BITCH

He is the one who signed Harper to that asinine contract in the first damn place. Knowing that he couldn't cover a geriatric. The least he could do was restructure it. Loomis does a lot of great things with contracts, and he is a wizard with the cap. But that contract was definitely a mistake. But he still has a pretty good average I guess

Himself. If he has another monster year that will raise his asking price. It's a risk, but given his talent level it's only a small one.

He could take $7-8 mil a year now or wait and ask for $10 mil a year next year.

Edit:
infantry, Loomis doesn't do the evaluating or decide who to keep. Payton says he wants a guy and it's up to Loomis to make the numbers work for what the player is asking.

And he is one of if not the best at making the numbers work. Like someone said we were well over the cap, cut very few players(no one major), signed quite a few FAs including a couple of potential starters, signed our draft picks, and are somehow $5 mil under the cap.

That's a headshot.

Edit:
Looked it up and we were about $18.5 mil over the cap before we started making moves:

LINK

Our biggest release was Dave Thomas, a backup TE. Given we have signed a better replacement I wouldn't call it a loss.

Our biggest FA loss was Bushrod, a middling LT who got overpaid elsewhere. If Smith turns out to be decent, we got a replacement for the vet minimum. Or if Armstead steps up we got a cheap replacement long term.

To go from $18.5 mil over to $5 mil under($23.5 mil swing) without any major releases and several significant signings is mind blowing.

The difference between Jimmy's situation and Drew's situation is that the other two top, young TEs just signed extensions, which gives us a framework for his deal.

We were waiting for the Manning numbers to come in for Drew's deal.

And it is a very under reported feat.

I really don't think this is how it works. Loomis is the guy meeting with the scouts and making personnel ultimatums. SP is just the biggest opinion to consider.

You think sp is runnin the scouting department?

Not running it per se, but Mickey has never been the final say in what FAs were brought in or who they drafted or what players they resigned, even in the Haslett era.

Haslett and Payton have always had final say. It's part of the reason Payton wanted the Mickey clause in his contract.
