Himself. If he has another monster year that will raise his asking price. It's a risk, but given his talent level it's only a small one.
He could take $7-8 mil a year now or wait and ask for $10 mil a year next year.
infantry, Loomis doesn't do the evaluating or decide who to keep. Payton says he wants a guy and it's up to Loomis to make the numbers work for what the player is asking.
And he is one of if not the best at making the numbers work. Like someone said we were well over the cap, cut very few players(no one major), signed quite a few FAs including a couple of potential starters, signed our draft picks, and are somehow $5 mil under the cap.
That's a headshot.
Looked it up and we were about $18.5 mil over the cap before we started making moves: LINK
Our biggest release was Dave Thomas, a backup TE. Given we have signed a better replacement I wouldn't call it a loss.
Our biggest FA loss was Bushrod, a middling LT who got overpaid elsewhere. If Smith turns out to be decent, we got a replacement for the vet minimum. Or if Armstead steps up we got a cheap replacement long term.
To go from $18.5 mil over to $5 mil under($23.5 mil swing) without any major releases and several significant signings is mind blowing.
