Paying and tipping at a restaurant with a card

Do the waitresses actually get the tip you write on the receipt? And if they do, When do they get that money immediately or at a later time?

Yes they do, they get it at the end of the shift when they cash out with the manager.

You caked her and found out she gave you a fake number?

I always write my phone number on that line. Works every time

I did that until one chick thought it was a 7 figure tip.

Nope, the owners keep it for themselves because the waiters/waitresses "don't deserve it"

Was just making sure they actually get that money and not the business just making extra. I'm sure they prefer getting cash though

Most POS systems force you to claim 12% of your sales, otherwise you have to have a manager's approval. So they can hide some money if you give cash but it honestly shouldn't matter

The ticket typically has the server's name on it. I assume this is so they can keep that straight, among other reasons.

Waiters only have to claim credit card tips. But when you tip on a card your waiter doesn't get the whole tip. Most restaurants make the waiter give up the credit card fee. Somewhere between 5 and 7%

I never had to pay a credit card fee on credit card tips.

Worked at a national resturant chain.

re: Paying and tipping at a restaurant with a card
Some people (like myself) get the tip via a paycheck. Cash tips we take with us. Now of the tip a server is given, they usually must tip out a certain percent (for me 25% of my tips) of either their total tips or net sales for hostess, bussers, bar, key employees etc.

Also, I've never heard of servers having to pay for credit card fees. It isn't their fault someone payed with a card

They don't get the entire amount because they take a percentage out to go towards taxes. That is why a cash tip is always extra appreciated even if you pay with a credit card.

Most places you get your money at the end of the shift. There are many where there are so many servers and high tip amounts that employers have taken to putting credit card tips on a weekly (or every other weekly) paycheck.... which SUCKS, trust me.

ETA:

I think the credit card fee others are referring to is actually the amount taken out for taxes. Credit card tips are on record with the IRS so a portion is automatically taken out as income tax.

I completely disagree. The restaurant I work for has gone to paychecks a little over a year ago. At first, it was difficult to manage, but now I love it because I don't go out as much as before and save a lot more money.

I always tip in cash. It's easier to hide wages this way, especially for young people working and going to school.

I've bartended, served And managed in many bars and restaurants and have never once heard of anyone making the server pay the cc fee

Please tell me where this is common practice

You're getting fricking if they are taking 5-7% for cc fees

And I alway tip on a card so those frickers have to pay taxes like me
