re: Alltime Saints Jersey # Countdown to First Preseason Game

Played one year for us in 1998 and had 53 and 1 touchdown. He was our #2 leading receiver behind Cam Cleeland (had 54 receptions).

We got him after he had a few good years in Indy. Then he went on to two years in Seattle and one in Jacksonville.

He was an All American in college at Cal and was the #16 pick overall at Indy.

According to Wiki, Dawkins pursued a career in real estate in Sacramento, California, and later trained to become a police officer in San Jose, California.

LINK
This is an article about him signing with the Saints:

quote:

Dawkins' decision to join the Saints, who ranked last among NFL offenses in 1997, was influenced by a dominating factor: his desire to be ``the man.''

``That was the No. 1 reason,'' Dawkins said in a telephone interview from his mother's house in Sunnyvale, Calif., ``to come there and be a starter and possibly be the No. 1 guy. Definitely, I took that into account.''

quote:

The acquisition of Dawkins means the Saints won't re-sign Randal Hill, a free agent who led New Orleans with 55 receptions for 761 yards last year.

``Randal is out the door,'' Saints general manager Bill Kuharich said. ``We won't pursue Randal.''

Dawkins' contract includes a $150,000 signing bonus, $400,000 base salary, $25,000 workout bonus and $175,000 roster bonus due Sept. 1, plus another $735,000 in incentives tied to his performance.

quote:

I'm not too pleased we took it,'' said Angelo Wright, Dawkins' agent. ``I fought long and hard against it. His mother told him, `Don't take it.

Damn those were some dark days.

Yeah, Devery who was a second rounder and not looked at in the light of a #1 guy like Dawkins was and signed a 4 year $12,000,000 contract (w/ $6 million guarneteed) and a signing bonus of $3,500,000.

Cam Cleeland: He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 2nd round (40th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft.

He was our leading receiver his rookie year with 54 receptions.

For the Saints he had 93 receptions for 1,147 yards and 11 touchdowns. He played for us in 1998, 1999 & 2001. His problem was injuries. Over a 4 year span (64 games) he only played in 36 games.

He was even hurt when they were just goofing around. hazing incident LINK

quote:

Cleeland, a second-round draft choice from Washington, reportedly was struck in the face during a hazing incident early Thursday at the players' dormitory on the campus of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.

quote:

"My vision is about the same, blurred, and it hurts a lot," Cleeland, an All-Pac-10 selection last season, said yesterday. "I saw a specialist on Sunday, and he said there is a sack of detached fluid around the retina that's causing the blurriness."

quote:

First-round draft choice Kyle Turley, an offensive tackle from San Diego State, and rookie free-agent Jeff Danish also received minor injuries in the hazing incident that happened the final night of training camp.

quote:

Today, Cleeland has a construction development company and has settled down with his wife, former Husky softball and basketball player Mindy Williams, and their two young boys.

I like the reboot using the non first tier players tiger. Busy these days but will try to chime in now n then.

Prolly in the thread but a numbers reference that looks good to 2010.

It's from May of 2012. I just posted in it again instead of starting a new one.

#84 Rich Mauti
A receiver for the Saints from 1977-1983. He was undrafted and a special teams ace.

He had 75 punt returns for 610 yards and 124 kick off returns for 2,836 yards. He also had 21 receptions for 314 yards and 2 TDs.

From his wiki page:
quote:

Rich was an All-American Lacrosse player at Penn State.

His son Patrick played wide receiver for Penn State from 2005-2008 and his son Michael is currently a linebacker.

Rich currently works as a real estate broker in Mandeville, Louisiana.

From some random stories I found on Mauti.
quote:

Mauti played for the New Orleans Saints from 1977-1983 following an excellent career at Penn State. Mauti became an extremely popular player with the Saints, known for his enthusiasm and tremendous effort on every play. Mauti was and remains very active in the New Orleans community.

LINK (Where is he now or was he then)
LINK (Reaction to Penn State scandle)

As a lot of LSU recruiting fans know, his son (Michael) went to high school in Mandeville and played for Penn State. He worked out for the Saints prior to the draft. He had a lot of injuries, but was drafted with the 7th pick in the 7th round by the Vikings.

Know your Saints: #81 Michael Higgins

He played college football at Div II Nebraska-Omaha. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints on July 27, 2011. He was waived on September 3, 2011, and re-signed to the team's practice squad the next day. He subsequently has appeared in four regular season games with one start and posted 2 catches for 1 yard. Higgins is one of the club’s tight ends known for his rugged blocking.

How about starting one that runs up until the season opener vs Atlanta? We will be at 100 days soon.

I'm really not a big fan of preseason ball, although it is better than nothing. I'm excited for those first 3, then after that I just want the real thing.

Some kind of countdown ticker until ATL needs to be added on this board. Winter is coming...

re: Alltime Saints Jersey # Countdown to First Preseason Game

Jimmy was the go to guy on this thread last year. Easily the best #80 for the Saints.

Here are some guys we picked up at the end of their careers who wore #80 for the Saints.

Alvin Harper was picked up off of waivers by the Saints. He never played in a game for us though.

Long time member of the Houston Oilers, Haywood Jeffires was a multiple pro bowler. He was in NOLA for one season in 1996 and had 20 receptions for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 2nd round (52nd overall) of the 1988 NFL Draft, Brett Perriman had 72 receptions, 953 yards and 4 TDs for us. He was traded to Detroit for a 5th round pick. He went on to be a really good WR for the Lions.

Jerome Pathon was a 2nd round pick for the Colts. Did some kick returns and had some decent numbers before signing with the Saints for in his 5th year. For us he had 121 catches for 1,682 yards and 9 touchdowns. One of those TDs was the infamous River City Relay shown above.

Mark Campbell played 3 years for Cleveland and 3 years for Buffalo before playing 2 years for the Saints. For us he started 14 games, had 30 receptions for 285 yards and 2 touchdowns.
