re: PC Discussion - Gaming, Performance and Enthusiasts

I'm shooting for programming right now (start my first programming classes this summer), but if I don't like it then I'm moving to infrastructure/networking

Ceiling in help desk? Lol I don't think anyone looks at hd as a career, its just a spring board to the actual career path like sys admin etc.
Most networking careers start in the noc. Similar shitty hours and pay. If you want in security you will need a few years of networking and some Linux skills. 5 years of networking exp and say a ccnp and you can expect 80k or more I'd say.

I'm going to cert up before moving on so it will be interesting to see how far I can jump.

A rule of thumb I've heard is you need a new title and salary bump every 30 months or you are being stagnant in this industry.

All I know now is c++ and some basic HTML/XML. I've been debating between learning a new programming language or studying and taking the s+ exam

I'm pretty sure my first course is through python since its the most basic language (what I've heard)

I'm really looking forward to learning about the wonderful world of coding and programming

I started learning a little bit of python last year on my own. I didn't keep up with it though since I wasn't using it. It's hard to stick with that if there is no goal for it, application, or and structure to it. It was just killing free time.

If you're willing to relocate I'd look at something geared towards data centers. You can work as a NOC tech and make more than you do now and then gear your education towards data center operations manager and make $$$$$.

Some new Haswell things:

1. Apparently you'll need a reasonably nice PSU.

2. 4770k overclocked to 8.0?

8.0@2.259 volts.
...and then it melted.

Ill have to look into that. I'm not set on staying here but I do have a house and a wife so not 100% flexible.

That benchmark is stupid...

They disabled HT and only 2 cores active. I can get my 3770K to hit 5.5Ghz on Air/Water if I disabled HT and 2 of 4 cores.

hahaha yeah, I saw that.

I'm really glad that I got my water cooling kit. I can experiment with higher clocks/voltage now and not have to worry about it melting down. I hit 4.4 yesterday in that 3dmark test(with plenty of headroom temp wise)and on air I couldn't touch 4.3 with a safe voltage.

I'm still doing just air cooling but I imagine for someone who does water cooling that's a cool moment.

What kind of experience to do this? I like that a lot of these jobs are in Atlanta from just a general search
