Trevor Hoffman with his 89 mph fastball and 600+ saves proves speed is not as important as location.

He could probably get that fastball into the lower 90s. That, being a lefty as many people mentioned, and if he has good location and control, he could see himself in an MLB bullpen for a solid number of years

he was low 90s with that fastball a few years back. i guess some of that loss in velocity can be attributed to not having full power in his push off leg.

Or that he has been out of baseball for a few years and been more focused on working out his legs for apparent reasons.

If you don't throw a football for three years and don't work out your arms as much as you used to when you were, I'm guessing you won't be able to throw the ball as far as you used to

Or Jamie Moyer pitching into his mid-40s despite throwing a fastball slower than most people drive on the highway

Funny cause Hoffman relied on speed. The difference between his FB and changeup was like 12 MPH. He had a killer change up.

He will get that up to 92-93 with pitching coaches in the MLB and focused strength training on his upper body and baseball muscles.

He had a nasty slider and solid curve. I think he makes a contract for a lefty specialist. He is also supremely athletic and could be a great fielder as P so he certainly isn't a liability in the field.

somebody refresh my memory on Chad Jones and his hitting... did he hit much for LSU? Ever? I just remember him pitching relief and trotting off chest-bumping players into the stands.

Leg strength has very little to do with it. Especially lower leg strength. Velocity comes from pelvis rotation and weight transfer. Jonathan Broxton and Tim Lincecum have about the same velocity. One guy weighs over 300 lbs and the other guy weighs 175.

12-for-35 (.343) in '09 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, and a .489 OB%

Threw 6.2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 ER. 7 SO, 2 BB.

Disagree. While velocity does come from hip to shoulder separation, leg strength plays a big part in that for most. To get optimal hip to shoulder separation, these guys get triple extension. Which takes powerful legs. I don't know a whole lot of guys that throw 90but the few I do all have very powerful legs. All have verticals close to 35 inches and can squat a ton.

That probably just means they have a similar power to weight ratio.
Ofcourse that huge size advantage Broxton has allows him to be a little less powerful and still throw as hard.

That and probably doing absolutely nothing baseball related for 4 years. Think about that. If starts a long-toss program, band work, etc. He'll pick that back up.
