Interesting take on baseball losses this year

Breaking down some things I came to this.

When we play our usual good defense, we are extremely tough to beat. We've lost 7 games this year, 3 of those we have completely given away (and all recently). So only 4 games we have gotten outplayed in and subsequently lost. 4 out of 50 games.

Flat out lost
BYU game 2 - lost 9-4
MSU game 3 - lost 10-2
Ark game 2 - lost 8-3
USCe game 3 - lost 4-0

Gave away due to poor fielding leading to difference making unearned runs
Bama game 3 - lost 4-3, 3 errors led to 3 unearned runs
USCe game 2 - lost 4-2, 2 errors led to 3 unearned runs
aTm game 1 - lost 2-1, 2 errors led to 1 unearned run

So almost half our losses came because we simply didnt show up in the field (And to a degree, at the plate). Not a big deal when you're talking 3 out of 50 games, which are certainly anomalies, not trends. There's other teams out there who are in the double digits in this, as opposed to us sitting at just 3 games out of 50.

In conclusion, it's baseball, even the best sometimes dont show up every game and it can bite you at the worst times, such as in those above games. We've given up just 20 unearned runs this year, 20 in 50 games (a phenomenal stat). 7 of those 20 unearned runs came in those 3 losses listed above under games we gave away due to poor fielding. Basically, the baseball gods sometimes align with the other team, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Definitely be happy this has only happened to us 3 times this year out of a possible 50. There's likely 290 other teams out there (maybe more) who would like to say the same or better.

Per Choupique our offense was the main problem in those games not our errors. Just our offense.

Our offense sucks!

Fire Dunn!

I don't think it is very accurate to say that we didn't show up in the field last night. The conditions were terrible as far as the ball being wet. There were many nice defensive plays in the game until the two errors in the 7th. One of the errors was due to a freshman being a hair to aggressive on a ground ball trying to turn 2 and one was a bad throw with a wet baseball on a bunt that could have been caught except that the baserunner arrived right when the ball did. I wouldn't say "our defense didn't show up".

While I agree the field was not perfect, I dont think it played a factor in either of the errors on us. Bregman simply misplayed a chopper and Ibarra made a horrific throw to 1st.

We've set a high standard for our fielding this year. When you have 37 errors in 50 games, having games of 2 or 3 errors when you average well under 1 would be "not showing up" in the field. Obviously there's much worse than that for other teams, but those other teams probably aren't fielding at a .981 clip either.

LSU needs to be better with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs. We've been pretty bad in those situations starting with the Alabama weekend.

Yes.. Ibarra was fricked by the pitcher "look what I found-ing" into a double play. Still, it's a trend they hopefully work their way out of.

So you don't think a ball that rolled through soaking wet grass could maybe have attributed to this?

Again, he was being aggressive trying to turn two. He wanted the double play and charged too hard and caught a short hop instead of sitting back and fielding a big hop. I'm sorry, I don't really consider it "not showing up" when there were plenty of very good defensive plays and a freshman SS got a little too aggressive on one ball, but whatever to each their own.

Yep, we scored 3 runs (in 10 innings), 2 runs, and 1 run.

Totally on the defense. Offense was awesome.

We looked fine all night long on grounders until that, no, I really dont think it made a huge difference. It COULD have, but it likely didnt. He had time, set his feet, and just mailed it wide. It happens.

Im not saying he wasn't trying to make a big play, but he absolutely misplayed it...it's happened to him a handful of times this year. He's still a former catcher trying to get used to playing SS at the college level. While he's definitely good at what he does, and makes spectacular plays at times, he also accidentally misplays some balls. Unless your name is Austin Nola, it happens to SS's more than any other position, just baseball.

He played SS/infield more than he caught fwiw. I know that adds nothing to the conversation, but the media has really blown the "former catcher" thing out of proportion. Had he spent that much time as a catcher, and played it adequately, he never would have made it here, broken finger or not.

FWIW, I totally agree with all of your points, and I actually had this same conversation with chopique on another thread a little earlier. Glad you see it this way too.

re: Interesting take on baseball losses this year
So in conclusion, our defense and pitching have to be absolutley perfect, or we will lose. Any unearned run will lead to a loss, because our offense isn't scoring many runs lately, save for the Game 3 of the Florida series.

Poor defense can hurt you in any close game, whether it's 8-7 or 2-1. It just so happens some of our worst defensive games have coincided with some of the worst offensive games.

True, other than Katz slipping in the field on a stop there were no other defensive plays blatantly affected by the field or a "wet" ball, even Glenn made some tough plays on bunts on the same wet ground. Ibarra had very little chance of making that play, wet or dry, and Bregman was trying to make a circus play that wasn't there.

Hopefully, this will calm people down. However, this may incite those to already write us off. Probably, this will make some realize how good we really are.
