I was told recently that if you have your concealed carry license, you are forbidden from open carry, is this true?

It depends on your state. In LA, OC is legal without a permit. But I'm pretty sure it's always been illegal in Texas to OC a handgun.

It is legal to oc in la, but my question was if it was still legal for someone with a ccl to oc while carrying their license.

This is not my experience

That may be the case. I have worked for a state law enforcement department and have interacted with many local departments around BR and I stand by what I said, in and around BR.

Around here, off duty cops VERY rarely open carry.

^^^^ This -- is the case among every LEO, and every retired LEO, I know.

Tactically, when you have the option of concealed carry, open carry is not a wise choice.

re: legal to OC with CCL?

quote:

Concealed Carry: From a tactical standpoint concealed carry has the benefit of surprise. A criminal that is not aware of your firearm will not pay any special attention to you. That may give you an opportunity to get into a good position to use your firearm to stop a crime.

quote:

Open Carry: Open carry has a couple advantages–first is that your firearm may be a deterrent. A criminal that sees your firearm may not be prepared to fight you–and may choose another location that isn’t so difficult. But the opposite may also be true–they may see your firearm and attack you first with the intention of eliminating the biggest threats. Another advantage of open carry is that you can draw your weapon much quicker (that time gap obviously decreases as you train). With your weapon not being covered with clothes you can access it more quickly.

re: legal to OC with CCL?

I see that you responded to me so I will respond to you. Obviously OC allows for faster drawing. However, I do not believe that OCing is much of a deterrent. I believe that if a criminal is going to commit a crime, they are going to commit a crime. I just would rather not be targeted first and have the element of surprise on my side.

ETA: I am referring to a store robbery or shooting. In a mugging OC would be beneficial but that is not at the top of my concern for my daily life style nor work environment.

Maybe my definition of "Open Carry" is not up to par.

You tell me then, if I buy a gun and want to get it out of the store to my car, or anywhere else, how am I supposed to do so?

This ^^^ be good advice.

It is very rare to encounter an "open carrier" who has ever had any training in weapon retention. Cops usually have this training, because uniformed patrol officers have to open-carry -- and the BG , if he wishes to take the cop's gun, knows exactly where it is.

When you carry concealed, (a) the BG shouldn't even know you have a gun, and (b) surely should not know where it is on your body. This allows you to be armed, but less vulnerable to a disarm.

BTW, cops are typically trained to treat a disarm attempt as a "murder in progress." Most of the defensive handgun training classes I've taken teach this same mindset.

It's almost guaranteed that if your gun is taken from you, step two will will involve having it pointed at you. Subsequent steps will likely depend on whether or not the thug is concerned about leaving witnesses.

YMMV

If OC is legal in your state then your possession of a CCL has no bearing on it. Its personal preference and the majority believes CC is better than OC.

Not trying to be a dick here, but I just want to make sure I'm getting good information. What training/class/work experience have you had to state this? Again, not trying to be a dick. I just cant think of a better way to word my question.
