So what you're saying is that Chase Daniel > Dan Marino or Jim Kelley or Bert Jones or Y.A. Tittle? Rings are a team accomplishment and don't really mean anything individually; they can be hocked for drug money.

No, you're being too black and white about it.

I'm saying Peyton Manning> Marino. And the thing that really puts him above Marino is the one super bowl ring he has.

When you compare two players that are great (Not fricking backup qb's who are never going to start in the NFL) and you are looking at their careers. You've got comparable stats, one has more pro bowls and no super bowl rings and the other has a super bowl ring. The one with the ring gets the win.

I personally apply the rule to every position, not just QB's. shite Randy Moss has comparable stats to Jerry Rice. He's second in almost every category, except one of them won super bowls.

*I am, by no means making the argument that Moss>Rice, just using an example.

Maybe it's just me, but being on a roster of a team that wins a championship is not individual success.
Don't forget, Johnny Robinson had nine All pro seasons, although this was in AFL days, in part. At the time, he was probably the best safety ever.
As a result of this discussion, the guys who rise to the top of my list are:
Winston
Robinson
Taylor
Faneca
Mawae
The best single season by an fmr. LSU player would be Bert Jones in 1976; however his career QB % is something like 78.

Rings are also a product of being on a good team. You could be the best at your position for 15 years and never win a Super Bowl but that doesn't mean you weren't a success.

ETA: Who had the most success (edited from 'best')?
Marino or Manning?

Marino or Brady?

Marino or Montana?

Marino or Young?

Marino had the most talent. Manning is the "best" one overall because of his approach.

With a 15 year career as a RB (all with one team), Kevin Faulk has to be in the conversation.

Bert Jones needs mention as well.

OK, I like Kevin Faulk, too.
However, his success does not measure up to some others mentioned here
Jim Taylor was also a RB in the NFL (for 9 yrs). Both had 3 NFL championships.
Faulk (11yrs) :
3600 yds rushing;
31 TDs (rushing and receiving);
4.2 YPC
Taylor (9 yrs):
8600 yards rushing;
83 TD's
6X All Pro
4.4 YPC

Dalton Hilliard was a better NFL back than Faulk.

Johnny Robinson was All-AFL nearly his entire career, sits in the Chiefs' Hall of Fame and has a Super Bowl ring.

Kevin Faulk...

Also, Eddie Kennison had a decent career. And Dwayne bowe had made a name for himself after only a few years in the league.

Bert Jones is my choice too. He was awesome for the Colts for many years.

His talent was mostly wasted while at LSU...sharing the load with much lesser talented QB's.

I cannot believe he isn't in the HOF. Jerry Stovall had a damn good career as a DB for the St. Louis Cardinals, but was overshadowed by Larry Wilson. I can't believe all these people picking Kevin Faulk over Jim Taylor, Van Buren, or Tittle though.

Bert followed a legend in Johnny Unitas and was the last good quarterback the Colts had until Peyton Manning.

Leonard Marshall easily belongs in the Top 10 productive NFL players who prepped at LSU. Had a storied career with the Giants and won 2 Super Bowls like Faulk.

Lawrence Taylor specifically stated that he was his favorite colleague on the defensive side.
