The truth about Garrett Hartley

Since 2008 when he was an innocent rookie kicker that went 13-13...

In 2009, he finished in 21st ranked place in FG % (Fair to add 5/5 Post Season Performance)
In 2010, he finished 27th ranked place in FG%(3/3 Post season All less than 30 yards)
In 2011, he didn't even kick for us partly injury and part lack of faith
In 2012, he finished 23rd in the NFL in FG%

I know his cumulative career % is 8th all time but since his 2008 seasons, he's been very sub par. Keep in mind like 26 of the top all time 33 kickers by that stat are all active kickers. So take the statistic with a grain of salt. His last 4 years performance puts him on the bottom end of all that list of active guys.

I think we should have kept John Kasay and rode that horse until it quit. He was money for us in 2011.

In 2012, he made 18/22 field goals. His percentage is so low because the Saints score TDs more than they go for FG's.

For comparison, he kicked the second most extra points in the NFL.

I'm all for a change at the kicker position, but who do you replace him with? The Saints have tried to find new kickers and haven't had much stability until Hartley came along.

This makes no sense whatsoever. Are you trying to insinuate that he doesn't "get enough practice" because the Saints are too busy scoring touchdowns?

He might not get many attempts, but that has nothing to do with how often he puts one through on the attempts that he does get.

In 2011, Casey was 22nd in the NFL in % with like 82%. He was pretty good but wasn't great either, showed a huge lack of faith developing with Hartley on top of his injury whatever it was.

I haven't even discussed his lack of kickoff ability yet.

He is riding that 40 yards NFC championship kick hard. Its taking him farther than Tracy Porters Pick 6 in the superbowl.

We will have competition in camp. Cutting him frees up around 1.01 mil I think.

As of April 24th

Lawrence Tynes
Neil Rackers
Billy Cundiff
Ryan Longwell
Olindo Mare
John Kasay
Dave Rayner
Justin Medlock
Rhys Lloyd
Garrett Lindhom

I'd like to know the distances he missed from in 2011. I remember him being damn near automatic from anything under 45 yards, but apparently he missed a few here and there.

Also, I would take any kicking % ranking stats with a grain of salt as well. A miss from 60 yards counts just as much as a miss from 35, but the two are definitely not the same.

re: The truth about Garrett Hartley

John Kasay in 2011: 28 of 34 for 82.4%

Garret Hartley in 2009: 9 of 11 for 81.8%
2010: 20 of 25 for 80%
2012: 18 of 22 for 81.8%

Doesn't appear to me he was really more money than Hartley, especially given he had more chances to get more into a rhythm.

Kasay for his career is 81.9%. Hartley is 84.5%. Taking out 2008(since people like to skew stats to fit their argument) he is 81%. "Big" difference.

This whole BS about him finishing so "low" in % is because all kickers are very close in % except for the extremely rare great ones or the bad ones that haven't been cut.

80% is par for the course when it comes to kickers and Hartley is on par. If we luck into one of those extremely rare great ones, fine cut him. Otherwise you are taking a chance of going back to a 2007 Mare frick or 2008 when we had a revolving door.

he didn't play.

in 2012, 3 of the 4 were under 40 yards. one may have been a 40 something ish yarder.

Kasay who wasn't that good himself replaced Hartley. What does that tell you? This isn't a thread to support going back to Kasay, it's a thread to upgrade the kicking position. and past 5 years is a good enough sample size to dismiss a quick start for a second to get a good perspective at what he's really been for us lately.

Kasay was a bandaid to a kicker that needed training wheels put back on.

re: The truth about Garrett Hartley

Chad, I see what you're saying, and yes, Garrett Hartley hasn't been totally up to par the past few years. But, no matter what happens, I will always be thankful for that kick he made in the NFC Championship game that sent the Saints to the Super Bowl. To make a game-winning kick under that kind of pressure is a special thing. It's definitely not an easy thing to do on that stage (Gary Anderson hadn't missed a field goal all season in 98 before missing the kick in the NFC Championship game against the Falcons).

So yes, Garrett Hartley statistically is not one of the league's better kickers, but on that one kick alone, he deserves a place in Saints' legend.

So you don't get nervous when Hartley is kicking an important 35 yarder? Because I expect that shite to get pushed hard left every time.
