If he continues to make good grades, what's the point in holding him back? You'll separate him from all his friends and the kids behind him will think he's stupid.

Do not hold him back. When he graduates college at age 20 like I'm about to, he'll thank you.

And don't get me started on the private school "money-grab" aspect of this.

...

It's a racket people.

They got us on this...They wanted us to do it in pre-K and I said no...brought it back up and convinced the wife in K. He's just finishing up his 2nd go a K, his is a bit more mature but he could have done first grade. We were suckers. They get the only child parents since the ones with multiples would just tell them to frick off. We see the kids that went on and our boy is at least as mature as they are...

Pisses me off. But hey, I saved another 1/2 semester of college tuition for him.

The redshirting phenomenon has gotten so out of hand here that some school districts refuse the children thus forcing them into private schools.

What is considered a late birthday? August?

I'm starting my kid late, but not holding them back.

Older kids have all the advantages. They are better in school and sports because they are more mature. This often leads them to be put in advanced classes and selected for better sports teams.

Outliers I believe is the movie/book (and maybe freakanomics?) where they discuss how some big majority of pro athletes were old for their grade. (they use hockey)

In Alabama, it's August because the cut off date is September 3rd, I believe. I don't know about Louisiana

Here's the thing. He never got a single conduct mark. He wasn't disruptive. His grades were good. And he is a February birthday (one of the oldest kids). And after that he never had a single issue, either at PBS or elsewhere. And nows he's in the Magnet program and on track for Baton Rouge High.

It was a money grab. Pure and simple. And they thought we would acquiesce. And I lost my shite in the Principle's office and they backed down. And his subsequent development has vindicated our judgement.

And here is something I left out :
Not only did they recommend it, and we said no---BUT WHEN WE WENT TO LOOK AT THE 1ST GRADE LIST TO SEE WHAT CLASS HE WAS IN-HE WAS LISTED IN KINDERGARTEN. THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT WITHOUT ANY FORMAL AGREEMENT OR DISCUSSION-JUST ON THE RECOMENDATION OF THE TEACHER.

To say I lost my shite is an understatement.

September 2 is usually early because that is the traditional date for cut off for schools and sports and then it goes from there.

So if your 5 year old starts kindergarten in August and then turns 6 in September, he/she will be ahead of most of those in his/her class.

This is why I would never do it... my younger sons has buddies already in kindergarten. Luckily he has a late birthday, so he is already one of the older ones and bigger ones. I'm confused why the facebook poster would do this do a child with a late birthday, normally the early birthday kids parents want to do it.

The girls are more mature, the schools are thusly "feminized" by school administrators (almost completely female), and the boys are portrayed as being "immature" for being normal 5 year old boys.

In the PC culture of today, "educators" (and I use that term loosely) just can't comprehend the idea of a 5-year old boy acting like a 5-year old boy. They have been so brainwashed into thinking that all of these kids should be Stepford Children, which is why they also try to put these kids on the "drug du jour" to keep them from acting like 5-year old boys SHOULD act. It's the little freaks that act just like these "educators" want them to act who should really be scrutinized.

The argument which is loosely supported by some academics is that older HS students outperform their younger counterparts academically, emotionally and physically. The physically part is what draws many parents to redshirt in hopes of greater athletic success for their child.

We have had multiple instances of 19-20 year olds playing HS football here that have never failed a grade. Their parents actually put them in Kindergarten as a 6 or 7 year old...

Just from what I've seen in high school....

Girls that are the oldest in the class tend to be whores; and boys that are the oldest in the class tend to have drug problems.

My kid's public school actually wanted to do this to my daughter. Both of my kids have summer birthdays and they are a little behind on the other kids developmentally. My wife and I went on and on about this. We sent her on. Now she is a Junior and everything is wonderful.

Hot news flash people, some kids mature and different rates than others.

My kid is a July birthday so I guess I can expect there to be plenty of kids 1 yr older than him who should already be in 1st grade when he starts kindergarten?

It was a private school in Shelby County- that's really not Alabama
